Body Kit Cause Issues? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

I was planning on installing a replica TRD body kit. I know some parts of the kit install over factory painted panels and attach with clips and/or tape. My question is as follows: Is it possible for the body kit to move against the factory body panels while driving and rub paint off or otherwise damage the finish underneath? I just want to make sure the kit will not harm the finish of the car if installed properly.

It shouldn't but it doesn't mean it isn't possible, maybe if it was installed incorrectly. A member here had their oem mudflaps cause their paint to crack.

Any and all kits can and will do this over time. Only way to prevent is to run some 3m film under the pressing edges. Even stock oem mudflaps cause some rub and wear marks.

Thanks for the Tip, I just got my Body Kit and will be sure to install some of that Clear 3M material prior to install it.

Had my TRD spoiler on for about 4 months with 3m tape and not drilled into the trunk. Took it off later and I saw scratches that were notice-able when you look close, all body kits do this over time.

Wouldn't a good polish remove those scratches though?

Depends, I did use polish and most of it went but some stayed.

So I guess I will want to clear bra under the kit. I think I can handle that

yeah your best bet is to just do a 3m clear strip below the body kit. If you cut it JUST above the top edge of the front lip/side skirts/rear spats it won't be noticeable and when you take it off you can just peel off the clear. That's what I plan to do.

It will have to be a foam tape like material (double sided 3m applique tape works.) Just apply clear vinyl tape to the backside won't do much. This is evident on any cheap truck fender flare you see a hundred times a day.
