I always thought they be kinda low in numbers like the STI, there isn't very many of those if you think about it as a whole. But still there's enough to go around.

Unless I'm having a brain fart doesn't that mean that at least 7% of these married people are kids living at home? :P

Are you dealing with west houston Subaru by any chance? That's where my deposit is and what you said about the pricing is interesting.

That doesn't make sense considering the extra weight and usually auto is always a little bit lower mpg then manual.
Gear ratios:

Code:
gear MT AT
1 3.626 3.538
2 2.188 2.060
3 1.541 1.404
4 1.213 1.000
5 1.000 0.713
6 0.767 0.582
rev 3.437 3.168
DR 4.100 4.100

Note: 3.727 DR will be available for the MT in some markets.
MT 5th = AT 4th
MT 6th is shorter than AT 5th

These days, ATs are pretty efficient. For purposes of comparison, the GTI's AT also gets better MPG than the MT:

GTI
DSG 24/33/27
6MT 21/31/25

From what I remember of the GTI DSG and 6MT, the overall ratios are close (individual gears are different, but that's somewhat offset by the DRs being different in the opposite direction). But I could be wrong.

There's no way that a car that weighs more than 700 lbs less, has 50 less horsepower, half a liter less displacement and a whole extra gear is getting worse mileage. I don't care how high the compression ratio is, there's no way this car gets less than 35 mpg on the highway.
My friend's Legacy GT gets about 24 MPH highway real-world, and a little over 20 in mixed driving. It's rated at 18/25/21 MPG.

Many sporty cars with small engines tuned for throttle response and increased output don't do well, especially on the highway. 22/30/25 for the 4.1 DR MT is on the low-end of the range I've been expecting for EPA ratings. I won't be surprised if real-world highway MPG is in the low-mid 30s when it's driven moderately conservatively.

Thanks for the info. That median age is higher than I expected. Also, I assume that's household income since in 2011 $89k corresponded to:

Single: 95th percentile
Head of Household: 96th percentile

Actually it is household income and not individual income

I'd happily pay $3k more for the Subaru, regardless of HID's. I like the interior that much more, plus - it's irrational, but I can't see myself driving a Scion. It's dumb, and totally mental, but I'm 35...Scion has always been a late teen-early twenty-something car. I know it's the same car...like I said, irrational. Plus I have some brand loyalty to Subaru.

It sounds like Subaru is marketing this car to people like me...fairly older (35), enough income to invest in a "just for fun" car, on the verge of a mid life crisis, young kid (or kids) at home who are still small enough to fit in for the occasional pick-up from daycare.

And the FRS is for the rest - younger folks, this is their main car, and need something a little bit cheaper. It's a good idea if you think about it, it's Subaru's way of differentiating and being seen as "upscale" compared to Toyota.

Speaking of Toyota...if this came as the Toyota 86, I'd be much more likely to consider it instead of the Subaru.

Americans overall live past their means... something like 80% of all Americans have "large" amounts of credit card debt. So buying a car that is designed for that 90~th percentile is pretty common- I know a ton of people that work at the local boeing factory pulling down 30k a year driving STIs. The parking lot is FULL of them, haha. And heavily modded/brand new ones, at that.

So overall, the target might be high for that income range... but it kinda doesn't matter, with how good we are at spending ourselves into a hole.

The mid 500 cars a month is the number I had a couple days ago.
