Questions without answers at this point. Like everything else, just wait.

I long ago stopped caring about building a car to the SCCA rulebook. No matter what you do to the car or what class you fall in, in reality you are racing someone else's checkbook.

The day I stopped paying attention to the rules and modded my car anyway I wanted is the day I started having a blast at auto-x.

thanks for that.

I've got a stage 2 WRX, and I've always been afraid of auto-x for it, because it's not to the rule book so I know I'd be outclassed quite a bit. And now with the BRZ coming, I want to autocross it, but I also want to mod it, and the decision is a tough one.

I'm in the same boat. It depends on how into it you are and what car you have. Me owning an Evo I couldn't mod became really stupid really fast. Do as you please, go to track, go as fast as you want for extended periods of time. Not knocking autocross, it was fun and I'll always start there with a new car to learn how it behaves. But it's not for me anymore.

Yeah I run with a group that bases it's groups on SCCA classes but very loosely... it's much more fun.

Street Touring allows as many modifications as you are likely allowed to do under the factory warranty, and you run on street tires...STX is where I am headed with the FRS, anyway.

We run street touring and have the car set up about as much as I'd do it if I was just building a decent street car, though I probably wouldn't be buying a new set of tires every spring. And I'm willing to guess that the two-time national champion in our class has less money in his car than we have in ours (this is kinda sobering).

Building to a rulebook is what you have to do if you want to compare yourself head-to-head with the best in the business. That's what we wanted to do, so that's what we did. And without spending ourselves silly we have a very good local car that's not embarrassingly bad on the national level (31st & 34TH out of 39 last year) with drivers who still have some miles still to go on the learning curve. And we have a fun car that's very streetable still, the wife takes it to work and back a couple times a week here in the lovely DC area.

Since we're semi-serious about our little Miata project, I don't see us autocrossing whatever BRZFRS we wind up getting down the road. Our STS car is too competitive and too much fun to leave home.

I'd rather spend my time & money on a real track, plus who wants potential cone scuffs all over their brand new toy?

But no seriously, being a driving enthusiast I'm sure I'll sign up for as many events as I can, be it autocross or track. I was a bit put off by autocross because you spend 8 hours in the hot sun for maybe 10 minutes of time actually driving.

Cone scuffs are the least of your worries at the track

That said, I agree with you guys.. these days I much prefer HPDE to autocross.

I'm too poor to afford the track 1-2 times a month. Autocross is cheaper for me and I like the social interaction with the other people there. Admittedly, I've not been to any local track days.

For me the biggest turn off was just sitting around, standing on cone duty for the whole day for maybe 4 runs if that. I had fun for sure but I don't know just seems the boredom to fun ratio was far too skewed. Just my thoughts and I know I'll probably do autox again but I'm just being negative I guess :[

I'm going to autox the crap out of an FR-S. It's one of the reasons I'm so interested in this car.
