Vortech Supercharger Track Shakedown and Impressions
Finally I got the chance to go to the track to shakedown the Vortech kit. I had a lot of questions in my head namely:
1) How drivable is a supercharger on the track? 2) How will the oil, transmission and water temps hold up? 3) Do I need a BBK? Or will a pad change suffice? 4) How did my supporting mods work as a whole? 5) What else do I need to keep the reliability when tracking the car? ![]() I also did a track clinic with one of the top Philippine drivers, he laid out cones to illustrate the correct racing line and apexes around the track. What a better way to shakedown the car. Also, Speedworks Engineering was also at the track in full force because they were also shakingdown their 1000whp Honda Civic drag car. I did a total of 12 laps for the day, around 8 of them hot laps. My previous best when the car was NA was a 2:24.71. When I first went out, I left the TC on just to get to know how it will react on the corners. I was also shifting at 6000rpm. Best time with TC was a 2:26.25. First thing I noticed was the power was always there, especially if you keep it at the 5000rpm range. Powering out of corners was so good compared to NA. I was able to get the speeds I was getting NA at half throttle now. During our second session, I turned the TC off and shifted at redline. I noticed that I had to brake so much earlier compared to NA or I will miss the apex. I also faded the brakes after 4 hot laps. Harry's lap timer showed I was around 10-20kph faster in the straights. I topped out at 199kph on the main straight, compared to 180kph NA. Best time of the day, 2:21.14. Question #1 How drivable is a supercharger on the track? Answer: Very drivable. The car still retained it's character, with power available all the time. Here is my best run of the day: [ame]http://youtu.be/DaaXnwpYiYc[/ame] Question #2: How will the oil, transmission and water temps hold up? Answer: Oil Temp topped out at 140degC after 5 laps, water temps pegged at 120-125degC, while the transmission safeguard showed its head again. Temps recovered quickly though, oil temp went down to 115degC and water went to 100degC as soon as I went to a cool down lap. Question #3: Do I need a BBK? Or will a pad change suffice? Answer: I think so. Brakes faded as early as 3 laps. I almost ate a cone while the pedal went mushy during a corner. Brake pad change will surely net more stopping power, but the heat it will generate will just overheat the stock rotor, and the stock rotor just does not have the cooling capability to dissipate the heat. Plus I think a BBK will let me go back to my previous braking points with the added speed from the SC. Question #4: How did my supporting mods work as a whole? Answer: Very well. The larger radiator and thermostat regulated the water temp which made it recover very fast as soon as I went for a cool down lap. The catch can caught a lot of blowby oil, which I'm sure would have clogged the intercooler had it not been there. Even with the catch can though, my exhaust pipes looked like the engine threw up some oil on them. The 4.55 Final drive was a different beast with the Vortech. The car just powered out of corners with ease, which no doubt was helped by the FD. The various bushings and braces I installed also helped transfer and absorb the extra power the car is making now. Oil caught by catch can: ![]() Exhaust tips: ![]() Question #5: What else do I need to keep the reliability when tracking the car? Answer: The pressing need would be an AT cooler and oil cooler. I'm pretty sure the AT is getting a beating from this, it scary. The other one would be a Diff cooler, and a change to better fluids. I'd be interested in getting the Perrin Oil cooler and the SSP AT cooler once it is available. Stiffer engine mounts would be great too. I also toasted my tires. I'm pretty sure they're done for the season. Good thing the season is over and will start this february. ![]() So there it is, for some people who track their car and thinking about getting a Vortech kit, my opinion is go for it. But it doesn't stop there at just slapping the kit on. You have to get the supporting mods to run it reliably. If you don't track it, I guess you would be okay. I don't think I need more power at the moment, as I have just scratched the surface of learning to drive this car and have not maximized it yet.

Hi there! I've read your journal from start to finish and all I can say is thank you! My first car was the 86 and reading your journal really helped me a lot since I don't have a lot of experience and background knowledge about cars back then. I've learned a lot - from tires to intakes and exhaust and cosmetics as well. Thank you for keeping us updated! Keep posting!

TRD Fender Fin, Canards, Aero Stabilizing Cover, and Defi Boost gauge Install
TRD Fender Fin, Canards, Aero Stabilizing Cover, and Defi Boost gauge Install
Time for another round of cosmetic upgrades for the 86! I ordered some of the new parts from TRD, namely the fender fin, canards and aero stabilizing cover. I highly doubt that these would help the aero capabilities of the car, but they look great in my opinion. First off, I installed the fender fins. I opted for the painted version because I think it would look better on the car than the carbon fiber version. These replace the fake fender vent with the 86 logo. They go on easily, just pop the stock ones off, they should come off easily just work from the door side towards the front. The TRD piece came painted and match the cars color perfectly. They come with double sided tape already pre-installed, just peel the cover off before you install them. The painted ones don't come off as flashy and blend with the cars lines well. They have an engraved TRD logo which look really good. Next install was the front canards. I thought they were made of hard plastic from the catalog pictures, when they arrived, I was surprised they were made of a rubber-like material. They have two screws protruding and also come with double sided tape pre-installed. Installing these are not for the faint of heart, as these will need drilling the front bumper. TRD included a paper template to properly locate the two holes needed for the drilling. I just cutout the template and lined them up with the front bumper, stuck them on with tape and drilled where the cross marks were. After drilling, I popped the side of the bumper off to screw on the washers and tightened them. A fairly straightforward install. If you track your car, these things look right at home on the track. Third was the TRD Aero Stabilizing cover to be installed. This piece is supposed to smooth airflow around the rear trunk area. There is a small gap between the rear glass and the trunk. This covers that space with a plastic piece that makes the air flow over the gap. Plus there is the TRD logo that adds 1000whp! The plus side is that I usually find leaves and small debris when I open the trunk. This cover keeps those leaves out and keeps my trunk area clean. I also picked up a Defi boost gauge to keep track of my Superchager's boost. The gauge comes with a sensor to accurately measure boost and is teed in the vacuum line attached to the blow-off valve. The kit comes with all the needed parts to get the install done. I opted to put it on the upper left of my dashboard, to run the wires though the air vent to keep it clean. In order for me to take advantage of all these cosmetic mods, I needed the official TRD badge that adds 1000whp. I picked it up getting all the TRD goodies and stuck it on my trunk. Just eyeballed it, and went from there. It's called the TRD emblem B type, and it's made specifically for the 86. Next mods will be more performance oriented! Happy New Year!!!

You have a nicely done 86. I really do like how the TRD fender vents fix what is the ugliest piece of bodywork on the car... never liked the piston vent garnish and was so glad when I was able to change it out last week after finally painting, clear-coating, and waxing the unpainted TRD version. Nice to see you are having fun with it on track too...
