I'm going to say either a used miata or maybe a new Mazda 3 if $17-18k isn't too much...
![]() Second choice between a Civic or Corolla....

Just as an aside, I thought they extended that to 8 years/100k miles? No muffler. |

Agreed that there are better options for a budding enthusiast that will be more fun and practical with less hassle.
Edit: More in line with the post you were referring to, I don't think the engine issues in the RX8 is as big a deal as most make it out to be and the pros of the car are numerous. Not sure if you're joking or not, Abarth is the sexiest four cylinder I've ever heard built in the last 20 years and it makes one hell of a noise stock (I haven't heard one with aftermarket exhaust). [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shVaAJuXcxw"]Fiat 500 Abarth Stock Exhaust Sound - YouTube[/ame] Top Gear review on it is pretty good, valid since they're talking about what is essentially the version we get here today: http://www.topgear.com/uk/videos/take-abarth |

If Miatas are out of the question, a similar car I can think of is the 3rd gen MR2 Spyder. 94-01 Integra GSRs are also a good choice if she needs a bit more room but just about as much fun factor.

I've never driven an S13, but my '98 S14 was my intro to the tuning world. It was lowered 2.5 inches and on 225/45/R17's...with good rubber. This combo along with a front STB, made the car very predictable and "not" spin happy! perhaps an S13 would behave the same with similar tuning!

![]() Looks like it came with a little 'muffler box' with minimal baffling for the early 2012 models and went pure straight pipe quickly in the production. No argument that even the baffle is minimal in it's amount of sound dampening. Agreed it's a great little car, and I decided against it for the same reasons you did, I felt that the FWD layout would mean that I would become disinterested in the car several years down the road and return to the 86 or some other RWD car for more aggressive driving. I do think that for day to day driving on public roads the Abarth is much more fun than the 86, the Toyobaru feels like every other Toyota if you grandma it while the Abarth still manages to have some character when keeping things tame. |

Yes you do. It's not the sportiest car, or the fastest car. But damn it has a mean little growl, and there aren't many other cars that give the same experience. I suppose the Mini Cooper is going to be the most similar, but truth be told I prefer the Abarth. I haven't driven a Fiesta ST yet either, but I've heard those are even better.. So looks like I'll have to put that on my schedule to do.
