This is one sexy car. When the car was N/A, y'all used 17x9" wheels. Were there any negative effects (besides the slight weight increase) that y'all noticed from stock? I am torn between 17x8" and 17x9" rpf1's (my plans are to stay N/A) and you guys seemed to have tried it all (except maybe not the 17x8 inchers).

The 17x9 +35 RPF1s we used with 255/40/17 tires is the exact same weight as the factory wheel and tire combo. Thats how much lighter the wheels are. You can go up in tire width and still not gain weight. A 245/40/17 would weight less than the stock set up on the 17x9's

17x9 is only way to go IMHO.

If you're staying NA and don't plan on getting wide tires, the 17x8 is superior.

While you don't gain any weight by going 17x9, the moment of inertia on the 17x9 RPF1 is greater than on the stock wheel/tire setup, which still adversely hurts acceleration and braking.

We run both 17x8 and 17x9 wheels on our car, and the acceleration difference is noticeable between the different wheel widths and tire sizes. Additionally, lower offset is the trend, but higher offset is aerodynamically superior.

Interesting I had no idea that the aerodynamics were that affected by tire offset, however I am not surprised at all. The car is a DD that sees a lot of spirited driving and will eventually, when stars and work schedules align, see some very amateur driving on a track (with an instructor). My thoughts, coming from someone who has not owned a rwd sports car before, are that while the stock suspension and wheel/tire combo is sporty feeling, it is a lot softer than what I was expecting.

@CSG Mike: I was already leaning towards 17x8" with 235/40, but was previously looking at 17x9" with 245/40. Any reason, with 17x8, to look at 245/40?

If you simply want more tire, then you can fit a 245 on a 17x8, and still be within the tire's spec. We actually run 225 on 17x8 +45 on our car; the additional cornering grip and heat capacity of a larger tire wasn't worth the straightline speed loss when we're going for lap records. The wheel/tire setup doesn't look impressive at all, but that's why we also have 17x9 +35 wheels

Looks like my plan for 17x8 with 235/40 will probably be my best compromise between performance and looks. I probably won't be able to tell the difference performance wise between +45 and +35.

Thanks for the input, your info was very helpful and informative.

Currently still on the base tune from FA20Club which has proven to be very reliable. Great work from them forsure.

We have not yet spent time with the car with our tuner in house here though. It's on our January to do list with E85 and some other goodies. Car has to get ready for 2014 now. Looking for 350+ WHP which would be 100 more than it does now on 91.

Thats very interesting, you had no revisions done after sending logs?
You are running about 255HP?

I am having the hardest time deciding what to do, I want to ship the car the cali to one of the tuners for a custom open tune, and then participate in one of the ft86 time trial events.

After having the conservative Perrin tune (210HP) it seems the car can handle 250ish without maxing out the injector duty cycle with no knock on track. Thats really my main concern.

You have any plans heading there this year for any of the events?

No revisions, base line and went with it. 256WHP was the dyno on our local unit.

After logging it with out tuner here, it's definitely pig rich and could get a bit more out of but yet, it needs to be 100% reliable which it has done. We'll see how reliable it is once we start really pushing the envelope.

We will be heading west again for a couple FT86 events in 2014. Should come with us to one.

Most Perrin tuned guys are getting approximately 240whp on Map 1 and about 250whp on map 3 or 4. Why are you getting 210whp? The dyno links below are on early tune files too - probably version 4 or 5 - so I would guess the newer tune files are at least as good if not slightly better.
