So now to the main point! Definitely planning to get snow tires for her, but not decided between getting steelies or just replacing them on the stock wheels. What do you guys recommend? Also, if I do change to steelies, wouldn't I need to install new TPMS sensors too?

That's up to you. If you don't mind the light, that blinks for a bit and then turns solid - go without.
That said, now that my BRZ is my second car, I'm most likely selling my winter set of 16" alloys of Forester XT, painted gloss black with Michelins Xi3-s that have one winter on them and TPMS sensors installed. I can even flash those IDs if someone from the board buys them from me and doesn't have the tool.

This was true of old WS50 (?) and older. Newer ones are just fine. Nokian's are fine, on par with other best performers, but cost much more this side of the Atlantic. I would not recommend those these days, you can get the same grip for less dough.

Went through last winter with a set of General Altimax Arctics on the stock wheels.

To give you an idea of what they got me through:

Never took it to highway speeds in the snow, so I don't know how it would perform in those conditions. Worked flawlessly in the 30-40mph range though.

It was definitely interesting. One of the biggest things is the ground clearance. You really gotta watch out for the bottom of the front bumper and the damned differential. That diff hangs sooo low.

same tires in Chicago too.. no issues driving up and down I-88 60 miles a day round trip..

The sand and tool boxes were purchased at home depot. The bags of sand had real thin plastic, the tool boxes were a precaution to contain the sand, in case the bag decided to tear, it also made it easier to take out the weight, if the roads were clear and there were no huge storms on the way.

I'm getting a snowmobile shovel... I park on the street so even with my steelies, snow tires & 100lbs of sand/kitty litter in the trunk I'm guessing I'm basically boned with enough snow.

Up in Bruce county, Canada it's been snowing for the past couple of weeks now. Streets are not cleared that often and never salted.
With my fresh set of uniroyal tiger paw I haven't had any problems yet. They grip nicely and don't skid if brakes are pressed too hard. I did not get stuck in 1 ft of snow. And driving up hill or down hill car is always in control.
I would highly recommend these if you are planning to drive this beauty in snow/ice.

I had purchased Michelin X-Ice Xi3 and am very disappointed with them. Stopping distance is bad, slush/snow traction is horrible. The only thing they do well on is dry/wet pavement. They almost feel like performance winter tire. Steering response is very good and I do not hesitate going 120-130 km/h on the highway when it's clear.

Xi-2 which I have driven for the last 3 winters on G35 felt much softer and was much better in the snow/slush.

I will be returning Xi-3 until it's too late and will be looking for a tire that can handle snow/slush as well. And possibly going to 195 width instead of 205 for better traction.

At this moment I am considering between these tires which I can get my hands on:

- Toyo observe GSi5
- Gislaved Nordfrost 100
- Hankook I pike W419

I would appreciate any comments on experience with any of these tires in snowy/slushy conditions.

I'm in Madison Wi. Just put on 16" steel rims and Blizzaks. I really like them. They grab the snow. Stock tires are a disaster in the cold and snow.. the Blizaks are a real quantum leap in control.

Okay, so you will slide around more than oh, say, my Impreza.. but it's utterly controlled and even the significant other is telling me how much fun she has giving it too much gas and drifting the turns in the snow.

I am much relieved! It's gonna be FINE in the winter!
