Review embargo over - the initial drives being reported are very encouraging.

Interesting quote from one review:
Quote:
Think about it this way: The 2015 WRX outperforms – by Subaru’s own admission – its BRZ sports coupe in almost every way: handling, acceleration, you name it. Plus, the WRX has four doors and a useable trunk.

I guess I am not surprised by this. It has AWD, better tires, and a much more powerful engine (hp/tq). I think if the BRZ had better tires and similar power at the wheels it would be interesting...

The reviews are coming in on the WRX and man I'm starting to get that "car itch". Obviously I'm referring to the manual version only. Anyone else getting the itch when looking at the REX?

The car would have to look much better in person than the pictures for me to consider it. I am really disappointed with the styling. When you consider they had a clean slate and used hardly any of the sheet metal of the current Impreza, I think they dropped the ball in the styling department. I also loved the hatchback and they killed that off.

At the end of the day, this car is very different than a BRZ. It sits much higher (the WRX sits even higher than an Impreza) and it is not screaming sports car to me at all. In fact, I liked the styling of the previous gen WRX more, which is saying something, because I never really liked it either.

The car would have to drive like my BRZ for me to really want it. What I do like? The interior looks like a big improvement over the previous gen. The manual sounds like a huge upgrade over the previous transmission. The handling sounds improved as well as driver feedback. It has AWD for the winter. It has a usable backseat and I could fit all three kids in the back.

That said, I would wait a year for the STi to come out. I suspect a lot of people who rush out to buy a 2015 WRX might be disapointed when they release the STi to find out it is vastly improved as well and a big jump up vs the WRX.

I actually like the styling. I fall into the apparent demographic though. Mid 30's looking for a practical car that drives fast. IE a kinda sleeper car that doesn't draw too much attention.

I do agree on possibly waiting on the STI. My biggest problem with that is the obnoxious spoiler they are sure to slap on it. Kinda ruins the whole "sleeper car" thing.

Honestly I wish I could just have my FRS and the WRX. I would be a very happy person. I just don't think it's in my budget right now. Or I would.

I think the WRX and STi cater to different crowds. The STi is a little too uncompromising (and expensive) in my book for me to ever consider it. I think upper $20's is the most I'd consider for a WRX, getting into the high $30's for the STi is far too much, I think. But that's me.

Can you not order the STI minus the spoiler?

I agree with you - the spoiler is a bit obnoxious. I never did like it even when I was in my 20s.

I think the spoiler is standard on the STI. From what I have read is if you plan on taking your car to the track go with the STI. If you plan on using it as a DD then the WRX will be just fine and darn fast to boot.

I really love the Audi S4's but don't have the funds to spend. This could be a viable alternative. Although far less sexy.

It will be interesting to see what they do with the STi... As for the comments on the spoiler, I totally agree, one of my biggest turnoffs with the STi sedan, and why I liked the look of the hatch better.

Pretty clear that Subaru is not bringing a hatchback WRX in any flavor with the new gen.

Regardless of what Subaru says I highly doubt the new WRX is faster around a track than a BRZ given the same tires. Just no way.

Corrected it for you.

Guys, seriously - the BRZ is not that fast. The WRX is a pocket rocket but the BRZ is a sports car of the old days reborn in a new body.

But the new WRX would probably be faster is my bet.
