A red LED, which is what he asked about, if you bothered reading, is hideous and obviously illegal to anyone over age 17.

Is it specifically illegal? I couldn't find anything in the IL vehicle code. However, LE has the discretion to issue a ticket if it makes it "difficult to read" or if it's "too dim".

Isn't it all states that you can't interfere with how the license plate is displayed? So that means you pretty much can get away with either stock, cool white, or hyper white...which makes it easier to see. I know of people who have had either blue or red and it was a matter of DAYS before getting pulled over.

I choose a color out of midair for all the people who are bashing about it being "rice". Yellow doesn't look pleasing on it just because. Its the same principle as people replacing their halogen headlights for xenon ones, both are functional but one obviously looks better then the other. Red seemed more original then just white LEDs.

And to the people who actually gave reasonable answers to my question, thank you Much obliged.

WRB BRZ with a Blue led on clear turn signals/reflector on the fender/bumper will probably get me pulled over but I will probably do it :P

If I was buying the red or black model I would totally do red leds on the license plate, even if came with unwanted attention. I don't really see how replacing one source with another is rice.
