FRS\BRZ swapable items: or at least hope so...

FRS\BRZ swapable items:

  • HVAC ( to be honest I think plug and play, meaning universal wireing harness)
  • gauge cluster
  • Headlights
  • fender insert
  • struts\springs
  • seats
  • console\dash panels ( brushed metal vs black plastic)
To be honest most of this stuff is the normal "parts bin" meaning universal and swapable, I know with my 94supra the body\interior wire harness had tons of plug-ins for JDM stuff. I also looked in my parents lagacy the wireharness had those same ports for the jdm stuff too.... lets hope they keep to that same mindset... to be honest I think that they do this on purpose because is a customer wants an option they have to have that part of the wiring harness ready to plug "what ever " in...

Uhh, it's going to be basically the entire car since it's, you know, the same car. It would be easier to list the items you can't swap.

I have no doubt that almost everything will be easy to swap, but I doubt it will makes financial sense to do so...

What do we think OEM HVAC controls, BRZ headlights, GT86 Headlights, Bumpers, Fender inserts, etc will cost?

A lot of these things will be expensive and pretty hard to come by. Who would sell there HIDs and for what purpose, same with the auto HVAC? getting it from Toyota/Subaru will likely cost far more than it would be worth.

OEM are expensive. If I want to change Fender inserts, I will go aftermarket. If I want OEM HVAC, I will get BRZ limited, so there will be less thing to swap out.

I don't think HVAC will be plug and play. Having all that auto climate control stuff in all the cars wouldn't save money, which is the reason to not have it, right?

I'm sure you can do it, but I think it'll be like adding OEM Navi to a car that didn't come with it.....cheaper to just sell it and buy one that has it.

so the question becomes: if I want to get the JDM "GT-86," (outside looks like the 86, inside has all the BRZ nice-to-haves) should I start with a BRZ or an FR-S, and customize it from there? Which one do you guys think would be the cheaper route?

Both will cost a bit, starting with the BRZ will be cheaper. You could probably sell your stock BRZ head lights for a bit, which eases the pain of buying the GT86's. at that point I think badges + Bumper + Fender Insert will be cheaper than Push Button Start + HVAC + Keyless entry + Leather + Wing + Nav. but it is still gonna cost. Good luck to ya, and make sure you post pics if the deed gets done.

To answer "is the Digital HVAC swapable". Most reasonable answer is no. Heres why;

If your FRS comes with manually controlled climate control, chances are it lacks the hardware (control arms, etc..)to operate the vents automatically used in the Digital Climate control. Vise versa, Digital HVAC controls lack the manual control arms to operate the ventilation in a manual climate control.

Because of this control mechanism, the size difference between DHVAC & Manual Climate is likely substantial, and the wiring will likely be different by a few pin differences if any.

Also, while the headlights can be physically swapped. The headlamp operation may likely not be plug-in-play. FRS comes with a twin halogen bulb, with likely a small output DRL. The BRZ will come with HIDs with an LED DRL. Its unclear if the ballasts for the HID are integrated into the headlamp assembly for the BRZ, but chances are there is some modding to do.

This is why im getting the lower priced fr-s..i can just add the parts i want, mainly the brz headlights, when noobs start crashing these and parts become available....

How long until some rich kid tears apart an frs/brz and converts it to rhd, you guys know its only a matter of time....

And with the brz wiring compared to the frs headlights, i think there is a good market in making a plug and play conversion harness.....i think the hid lights are going to big a very popular upgrade for the scion guys.....

Thank you sir you read my mind. Along with that would be the troublesome push start you'd have to rewire to make work. All in short if you want all these amenities best bet is to go with the BRZ limited.

I think you are wrongly assuming that manual=mechanical and that only automatic climate controls are electronically controlled. It appears to me that the manual HVAC controls operate the blower and ducts electronically rather than mechanically. The giveaway is that recirculation is controlled via a button rather than a big slidey knob. I'd say it's quite possible that the only difference between the auto and manual HVAC is the controls. Given that both are electronic, it wouldn't make much sense to have different blowers, ducts, or wiring harnesses.
