This. The dealer is preying on your assumption that they have the final word, they don't. Document everything and go to corporate.

Also do what I did. Take photos/videos of the vehicle acting up. Might help.

Note: This was done for my previous vehicle, Cobalt SS. Not the BRZ. It sort of helped get the issues resolved with the Cobalt.

I think my mistake was assuming that they wouldn't want to piss off a lawyer (I am one).

I'm going to take video of the RPM drop at idle with my phone and have e-mailed Scion directly. I see why Northside Toyota/Scion has a 2 star Yelp & 2.5 Google Reviews rating now...

Never underestimate the desire to "save a buck" by cutting corners or trying strong arm. The mistake they made was assuming you were ignorant. Best of luck!

I think Toyota gave up on trying to fix my car. On day 40 something of it being at the dealer.

What really bugs me is how all the automotive press has gone silent on this issue after some big coverage in October 2012, yet all these problems continue, apparently some even with the 2014 models, all of which is completely unacceptable.

Haven't looked at this thread in a while. From what I see Subaru has addressed the issue with hardware while Toyota is only flashing? Is this correct?

I'm going to hit Auto News back up again to see if they can get an answer. To me the Subaru fix makes sense. Not sure I like the idea of a software work around.

Update 10:
6 Dec 2013

Cool Cool:
My last update talked about getting the car back to stock. I was able to complete that and after some phone-tag with Toyota/Scion Corporate I was able to get confirmation to drop my car off at my local dealership. I will be doing that sometime next week for the analysis to start.

My concern is that my case manager will try to offer as much support as possible but I might just be left with a big bill and a waste of time. The biggest issue Corporate and the dealerships had was my flashed ECU with ECUtek. Both of them wouldn't touch the car because of the alterations and Corporate required me to replace my ECU before allowing me to drop it off at the dealership to do a diagnostics. Personally, ECUs are on a 6-month backorder so I wouldn't be able to get one in a timely manner. I decided to have my tuner flash the ECU back to stock by bringing the ECU down to the shop. I'm hoping, based off of ECUtek's FAQs, Toyota and Subaru will not be able to tell the ECU was altered.

There are many reasons to stay with the standard ECU:

Security: Programming is performed via the diagnostic socket of the car. No hardware or wires are added or removed from the ECU. The standard factory diagnostic unit will report the ECU as being normal and unaltered.

http://www.ecutek.com/Support/faqs.aspx#FAQLink20
Overall, I am going to drop my car off in the next couple days and hopefully Toyota will warranty the car and the engine issues. I hope Coporate isn't setting me up for failure since they know they won't be able to pull any codes off the ECU (especially if it was replaced there wouldn't be anything to pull...).

I will let you all know what the dealership and corporate says about the car being covered or not. Stay tuned

It may have something to do with the 2013 models having the DI fix calibration file but its unavailable for 2012 builds.

100+ repair hours logged on my car, and 2 Toyota techs flown in later they have discovered the issue with my vehicle. The timing chain had stretched and kept popping the car into limp mode no matter what else they replaced.

Toyota is buying my car back under Lemon Law. Good luck to the rest of you with issues.

Glad Toyota is taking care of you. Staying with the 86 or changing platforms?

Scion replaced my ECU, cam gear, and cam gear actuator. So Toyota is replacing parts as well.

We are in negotiation, but it looks like I'll be exchanging my car for a 2014 model.
