You've got me there, I don't really know other than the weight. I just don't see the need for a 9" over an 8" in the first place at stock power..but that's just my lowly opinion.

Lots guys around here that track and auto x their cars run the 17x9 and a 245/4017. That said that tire is easy to come by in many performance tires as well for such purposes: ie BFG Rivals, RS3, etc...
As far as POKE goes up front, if you're on stock suspension just get some WL or SPC camber bolts, or HVT top hats whatever you prefer and tuck up the front tops to around -1 to -1.5 if anything you'll enjoy having camber more as the car handles FAR better IMO with front camber vs stock of 0 basically. People that do not want to have camber up front have no idea what you are missing out on. From stock to having some - camber up front for me was literally night and day in how the car can handle when driving spirited in twisties..

If you want to turn the car into a gokart just about anyone can drive reasonably fast while taking away the potential for a skilled driver to do amazing things, just throw the widest rims and tires you can fit and drop it to the ground.

245 tires are slower on stock power on track because they never get enough heat in them to maximize grip

the additional rolling resistance and resulting slower acceleration isnt made up by more grip

I'm running this exact setup 17x8 +35 on stock suspension and it sits very flush. The front is almost exactly flush without poke, and the rear is slightly inside the guards. Tires are 215/45/17, so with fatter tires it would decrease that wheel gap too.
This is the only decent photo i have at the moment.

well if you want to blow things out of proportion youre going to have a tough time extracting potential when you are just driving on the sidewalls on the narrowest rims possible. even if i took what youre saying without the ridiculous assumptions, there is more potential on a nine inch rim than there is on an eight inch rim. why do you think otherwise?

A 245 on a 9" wheel will be faster than a 245 on an 8" wheel, assuming the same tires and similar wheel weight.
245's on a 9" aren't stretched at all, but won't be bulging either so you'll get better steering feel too. I'm personally running 225's on an 8" wheel (+45 RPF1's) and there is a ton of grip with good tires (I have ZII's).

I stand by my concern, though. Properly fitted tires on 9 inch rims are too large for this car. I have real issues with function taking a back seat to style when it comes to choosing rim/tire combinations. I have never understood the logic of stretching a narrow tire over a rim that is too wide for it. It just seems like it's begging for trouble.
