Hi All, mine came with the Bridgestone Turanza All-seasons and this is my first winter. Noticed that many in this thread talked about their experience with the Michelin summer tires. Has anyone driven with the Bridgestones in the winter in the NY/NJ area, and can share their experience?

I am familiar with the major grip and stopping diff between all-seasons and winter tires in temps < 50 F as spaceywilly pointed out with those links, and have been debating whether to get another set of wheels and winter tires because this is my first RWD sporty car, all previous experience is with FWD cars and have always had only all-seasons (Michelin Primacy MXV4 and the likes which are some of the better ones out there) so not sure if these Bridgestones are decent enough in our NJ/NY winter.... the car is my DD and I drive 65 miles a day in central NJ so not a lot of hilly action but still....

EDIT - just wanted to add that am only really concerned about my 65 mi DD driving in central NJ (which is basically just GSP and I-280 really which tend to always be ploughed quickly and well), for any weekend travel I never use the FRS, we use the minivan. Just to give some context, i.e. I don't need to plan for major hilly areas or long trips or upstate NY etc....

thanks in advance!

as long as the tires are rated for the temps outside you should be okay, the roads are usually cleared in a day so we don't really worry about snow here.

however with that said, i have dedicated snow tires on my car, not taking ANY chances.

I've also been debating over whether to go with all seasons or winters, probably too much. I almost shit myself when I heard about the nor'easter that's supposed to hit us on Wednesday but apparently its going to be warm enough to just give us 3" of rain and not snow. But that could still all freeze if the temps drop right after which would be bad!

I think I'm just going to call it a day and get the Blizzak LM-60's. Like Jive said, don't want to take ANY chances haha.

From what I've heard, the LM-60's make a lot of road noise.
I got the Blizzak WS70's and man they are great in the deep snow we get in Canada. They make about as much road noise as the stock Michelins which is great for me.

LM60's here, in stock size. No noticeable increase in road noise from stock Primacy. Then again, I also have a supercharger and aftermarket headerback, so maybe it's the least of my noise

I think the LM's would be a more appropriate tire for a new york/long island winter compared to your Canada winter. Most of the driving conditions through our winter would be on dry roads, which the LM's are better for and don't wear as fast on

Absolutely correct, also factor in that the WS's are a studless ice and snow so they do not have good road manners. For performance oriented cars, you are much better off with the LM's and what we install most of along with the Michelin Alpin PAx's. The WS's are from experience louder than the LM's.

I drove in the snow last winter with the stock OEM tires and got stuck a street away from home and it was only a couple of inches if that. I got studded snow tires from general and have since driven in snow deep enough that it was up to my doors. I was able to make it up to the poconos and back (i'm in the lehigh valley).

Yes

Took a corner under 10mph & the front wheels didn't turn (think i hit some compacted snow from someone who drove it earlier under the fresh inch, you could feel it when the car got off the compacted snow) and the car hit the curb, so I now i have a deep scratch on the corner of the front bumper (a little worse than if you park & hit the curb). It was like a real time slow motion car accident. Never Again w/o snow tires. Was on the fence & now I'm definitely going to pick up some steel rims & snow tires. You just never know what's under that thin layer of snow.

Had to run out this morning before they cleared anything... I was getting on a highway and literally couldn't go over 5mph with an inch on the ground without sliding out. Besides that, if you could see pavement it was ok.

Tires are the stock bridgestones

Anyone who says the car does fine on stock tires in the snow did NOT deal with any hills or dirt roads in freezing temps trust me. One day before I got mine put away for the winter it snowed while I was at work and I had to leave it at the bottom of my hill because in just a couple inches of snow it would not go up my hill. I could spin all I wanted with trac off but there was no way I was getting up my hill. It was cold enough so that the ground was frozen and you could not get down to the dirt. Studded snow tires is the only way I would even attempt to drive it in the winter. But I have a beater FWD car for that so my FRS with sleep for the winter months.

If you need to drive yours in the snow you with no doubt NEED snow tires if you plan on getting anywhere. Otherwise get ready to be stuck somewhere. Maybe you can get away with it if you live in a flat area with all paved roads and never leave until the plows do their job. But even that is risky. But in the end its your car and your time so take it for what its worth lol.
