I believe mine are painted. I'll see if I can check later.

I found a couple on ebay but it's hard to get a clear view of the clips. It appears they are painted, but less than the visible part of the bumper (from what i can see). Hopefully you can confirm.

This was the best angle i could find on ebay.

Did anyone find a fix?

A fellow 86 owner reversed into my front left corner, it's been repaired but it still keeps popping out of the clips on that side.

Panel beater is claiming "its common on subarus and is just a poor design, we cant (and wont) do anything about it"

I have this issue after having my bumper off to be repainted after minor damage (coworker hit car, nobody admitted it, I pay deductible ).

The passenger's side looks fine. The driver's side there's a little unevenness between bumper and quarter panel. What bugs me more is on the driver's side, the edge of the bumper is slightly visible in front of the headlight and passenger's side is not.

I do see those black plastic bits in the seam like in the photos. It also looks like one or more of the loop-shaped tabs in the bumper piece could be cracked.

Same with me. After bumper repaint from cracking it the body shop did a shitty job aligning it back.

Body shop's say its the "stay" not the bumper. We've had several different makes that have this design and always replace everything they connect to or they won't go back.

I've looked into this as well as my left side sticks out more than my right. The piece of plastic the clip goes too doesn't seem raised up enough. Mine literally just rubs across it and won't lock around it like I think it should. I may try and create a groove in the plastic with a knife and see if I can get it to lock in place around the plastic bump with the tab.

I was going to try to heat the bumper very hot. Push it in correct place blue tape the shit out of it let it cool. And then re heat and re tape letting it cool again.
