I was perfectly happy with my previous car, until this car came out.
My previous car was a 1995 Toyota Celica GT-Four that I imported from Japan.
I plan on importing another one to use as a winter beater probably by next year.

S2000 is still better than this, it is just old, over-priced, but it got convertible top.

I hear the new convertible FR-S is in the range of 33-35k. Now, Toyota really seriously thinking about whether to produce it or not

I sold two cars to buy my Scion.
I would have kept my 1970 Fiat Spider and traded my '92 MR2 for a newer pre-owned Miata. I test drove a 2012 WRX, Genesis Coupe 2.0T and a Veloster Turbo. None of them did it for me.

I was looking into a used 350z or TSX at the time. I was really planning on keeping my civic for another year. But after one test drive during my lunch break, I HAD to get an FR-S/BRZ.

I think it's interesting the wide audience that the twins appeal to.

There's people who picked it over a hot hatch, people who picked it over a used sports car, people who picked it over an old project car, people who picked it over an econobox, people who picked it over an entry level luxury car.

Normally you wouldn't expect someone looking at a Lexus IS to buy the same car as someone looking at a S2000 or someone looking at a GTI, but the twins seem like the sweet spot for a lot of people.

I also think it's interesting what people are coming from - there's people who are trading in everything from late 90s beater sedans to people trading in brand new sports cars or entry level luxury cars (which I can't help but thinking has got to be a pretty big financial hit).

From the cars I test drove, the 2013 GTI was my second choice, but I'll readily admit that I cut my test drive regime short after driving the BRZ - I skipped the offerings from Mazda and Honda, and I didn't look at any larger coupes. I don't really like convertibles and I'm too tall for a Miata.

I couldn't justify spending $25K on something that's a souped up $17k car. The GTI was nice, and it was more refined, but it was fairly bland compared to the BRZ.

Had the BRZ not existed, I likely would have ended up getting a GTI, because I wouldn't have realized what I was missing. Had I been told during my car shopping process that the BRZ was unavailable, I likely would have bought a <$10K semi-sporty car. I was looking at used 350Zs, WRXes, and IS300s in that price range. I always had a soft spot for the IS300, thought it looked super cool, same with the BRZ, and I liked V6 Nissans from when I had a Maxima. Otherwise, I'd have just spent the money performing the requisite repairs on my Legacy GT, and continued to drive it til the wheels fell off.
