Okay so I contacted some dealers to see whether they'd be receptive to locking in a price like Giccin arranged in SoCal. Nobody knew what the hell I was talking about. Speaking with these people, who spend 40+ hours per week standing around Subaru products, reminded me that all this hype is really only focused within our core group of hardcore enthusiasts. Everyone I talked to said it was too early to even put my name on a list to receive information as it comes available. They ranged from not knowing what a BRZ was at all, to saying it would not be coming out until late 2013.
This all goes back to my point that negotiating with a dealer is a waste of my time. Which is my personal preference. And before I say anything more, which will surely be a sweeping generalization, I will bite my tongue. |

I think Lamborghinis are the most-rev'd-under-zero-load cars of all time. I know all types of car owners do it, but it seems like the Lambo guys really take it to a whole new level.
![]() By the way -- with 549 miles on the odometer, I think that video is making our long-term break-in devotees go catatonic. |

Lol well they can take solace in the fact that Lamborghini breaks the engines in on an engine dyno so they're ready to roar from the factory.

I like you. In addition to those exotics, motorcycles are also broken in on dynos from the manufacturer as well. Those things last thousands of miles with lots of abuse (and really frequent maintenance, to be fair).

What I'm saying is, I'm impatient and I don't want to wait - but I'm also rational enough to need to see it in person and sit in it. That's a bad combination right now.

I felt like saying, thanks but I think I'll wait for the other guy to be finished so I can talk to him directly. Not exactly the most fluid conversation when somebody has no clue what he's talking about. He also told me that the BRZ is only available in 4 colours, maybe even a 5th! :P |

To avoid sounding like a totally jerk with unrealistic expectations, let me add this...
I understand that non-superfans will be less informed. And I get that not everyone who may answer the telephone at a dealership may be current on upcoming product details. So I made sure to speak with a sales rep. And I made sure their website still featured the product I was asking about. At this point anybody sitting in a dentist's office in middle America has seen one of the magazine features about the car. Yet the guys at the retailer cannot tell me what I am asking about? But I am sure these same people will be the first to "drive a hard bargain" when I'm sitting at the salesman's desk trying to drive home in a nice shiny new vehicle. Extolling the virtues of the car, reminding me how in-demand it has become, and how hard to get they are... ![]() Dealerships are good at making deals. Generating profit. Inflating balloons. Product knowledge comes secondary. I'm sure there are exceptions to the rules but c'mon people, even those who are in the industry, you must understand where I'm coming from! bedtime for bestwheelbase.

I also get agravated with salesmen as I find the are constantly making inaccurate remarks about their own products or just straight up have no real clue. I've had a guy tell me that a mini cooper was rwd because its owned by bmw and bmw only does rwd. I've also had a ford dealer tell me that we don't want a rav4 because it only comes fwd with a 4 cylinder unlike the edge we were driving. I called him out on that one and he was like I must have it confused with another brand then. Really? What company makes a fwd only suv in this country?
Anyway, my point is car salesmen are just like any other salesmen. They don't need to know crap about the product they are selling as long as they are good at selling. Seriously though many successful salesman go from company to company pitching products and as long as they are good they will make sales. Car salesman are, in general, some of the least knowledgeable people about cars. Its kind of funny to me though that they sit around most of the day waitin for customers to come in and they can't find the time to memorize what features come in a certain package or what options are available on some of their most popular cars. I've had honda guys tell me I can get a sunroof from the factory on a civic lx, which is untrue for every model honda makes. Rant over. |
