That doesn't matter - the GPS is still pretty accurate even at high speed. In fact, typically the GPS accuracy at high speed is much better than it is at low speed, since the signal to noise ratio is quite a bit better. Also, GPS doesn't simply take a sample, then take another sample, and then divide by the time between samples to get speed. The GPS is actually measuring the doppler shift of the signals from the satellites, and combining them with the position to estimate your velocity much more accurately than it could using the simple, obvious method.

GPS aside, my point is that no one should post 182 or 183mph on any R6, no other info given, and expect anyone with any sense to just accept it. If they're going by their speedometers (and telling the truth!), actual speed was more likely in the 160-165mph range. 186mph on an '01 Hayabusa would be about 200mph indicated on the speedo on that bike. 186 indicated ~173 actual. Same for cars, but generally less extreme. Motorcycle speedometers are *notoriously* optimistic, sometimes much more so percentagewise at higher speeds (and hence *ridiculously* so going by mph error). Quote:
198.1mph car in the Texas Mile should be doing about 197.6 at 5148' and 198.6mph at 5280' according to my spreadsheet model. To gain another 1.4mph would take another ~200'. Did you really keep the throttle pinned 200' past the mile marker? In any case, you were freaking close to 200mph Last edited by ZDan; 11-14-2013 at 06:54 PM. |

Google "Craig Lieberman" and you'll see some of the ridiculous cars over the years. I had a pretty bomb childhood haha
Right now, he just has some new 7 series as a daily. He says he's working on something for the near future for a track/play car. No idea what though.

According to one magazine, I forget which one, and a couple of youtube videos (one on the autobahn, I think), top speed is 142 mph, which would be a calculated 6282 rpm in 6th. It's drag limited, of course. You mentioned top speed difference with a lightened car. I wonder if top speed would be affected at all since it's drag limited and a long ways from the calculated top speed of 167.28 mph @ 7400 in 6th. My thought is that your lighter car would reach terminal velocity sooner, but it would still be limited to around 142 mph, depending on conditions of wind, grade, etc. You'll want to run it in both directions of course for an "honest" result. I'd be interested in your results when you get around to it. |

I didn't know it was drag limited. We'll see though. I would've never taken the GPS along for the ride prior to reading this thread, but I will now. Even though it'll add like half of a pound.
FOR SCIENCE!!!

i topped the 86 @ 139 on a dyno, but she was still stock then. once i get the new clutch in, gonna try it again, see how the power has effected it, and what the top speed of the stock transmission is

It cannot pull redline in 6th. The horsepower is insufficient to overcome the drag in 6th gear. Otherwise, it would do 167.28 mph @ 7400 rpm.
Perhaps my understanding of "drag limited" is askew. Help me out here, friend. |

With OEM gearing and tires (or identical rolling circumference tires @ 844 revs/mi), the calculated top speed in 6th gear @ 7400 rpm = 167.28 mph.
My BRZ "floats" at 120 mph into a headwind. I don't like it. 167 mph? Better you than me. I'll watch. |

i'm smarter than that. i do it on a dyno, i don't have to worry about traffic, bumps in the road, or head/side winds.

And you're strapped down, too! Dynos have me scratching my head, Goose. Can you pull redline in 6th on a dyno? If not, why not? There's no wind resistance to overcome... |
