Same as above.
My wife has never driven manual. ALL of my previous cars were small sporty manuals and they were a joy to drive, but that joy was just MISSING when I test-drove the manual FR-S. The clutch and throttle on modern manuals give me no feedback and shifting ends up feeling like a tedious chore. I had the same feeling driving a 2012 WRX and a 2012 Genesis coupe 2.0T. After driving both several times I decided to go for the automatic. The power-to-weight ratio is pretty decent and I like the smooth, aggressive shifting in "Sport" mode. Paddles are just a bonus as I rarely use them. Starbucks lattes are easier to enjoy on my morning commute. I'm thirty and I want to enjoy this car for the next twenty. I'm not racing anyone. Of all my previous cars the one that stands out as being the most fun to drive was a restored 1970 Fiat 124 Sport Spider. Magnesium CD-3 wheels, new performance suspension all-around, 1800cc DOHC motor with header and Ansa exhaust. The thing was conspicuous in all the best ways. Rediculous. People will excuse you driving like an @ss if you're driving a beautiful noisy Italian roadster. For that almost spiritual connection to the car, my next manual will need to be a Fiat/Lancia/Alfa. :-) |

Seems like a lot of people have the same exact reason
1) Other people can drive it e.g. GF, parents, grandpa xD 2) traffic sucks ass here, near NYC 3) gas mileage I do wish I had a manual when I'm out for a nice drive. I'm always in MT mode and 90% of the time just commuting in traffic or wanting to hold hands or something I'm happy with the auto =D Kinda sad that I needed headers in order to just barely pull my buddy's stock MT brz. haha I do get quite envious whenever I ride along with him though. |

It was the only model available, 2nd day on the lot (May 30th 2012), and I wasn't on a wait list. I drive in a lot of traffic for long miles. I didn't autocross when I bought it.

Part of agreement with my wife... I could get the car I wanted but it had to be automatic. Originally we went shopping for a car for her and ended up getting a car for me (but an automatic). I'd say it was a pretty good compromise.

Car is my daily driver, but that doesn't really matter I would daily a MT as well.
My reasons are: 1. Gas mileage. 2. Can be lazy in NY traffic. 3. Paddles w/ automatic rev matches are a lot of fun. 4. Someone can drive it home if I'm drunk. I am very pleased with my decision to go with an automatic, love it! |

The automatic is the better choice for many reasons. The only question is why Toyota decided to fit taller gears to the automatic? Had the automatic used the same ratios or a shorter final drive to make them effectively the same as the manual then the automatic would accelerate as quickly. As it is the manual (which I have) is geared improperly for a road car in order to give it quicker acceleration. It also needs a seventh gear which it will never get. The automatic gearing is actually better to drive, I expect, just a little slower 0-60.

1) This is my daily driver and my daily commute requires an absolutely ridiculous amount of lights coupled with slow moving, congested traffic.
2) Better mileage since I typically have to drive pretty far to get to anywhere interesting. 3) I like flappy-paddles. |

I'll be that guy, I guess. I got the auto because I can't drive stick and had no interest in learning. Sorry guys. I'll go hide in my cave now because I've obviously outed myself from the car community.

A search of automatic transmissions will return quite a numerous number of threads in which the discussion has occurred.
In most of the results, someone will have also stated why they chose an auto over a manual. Also in these same results, you will also have people state why they chose a manual. Then you will have some sort of passive aggressive argument about transmission choices.

Auto.
1. I was an early adopter. It was available. 2. I had an S2000, and can drive stick, but don't always want to. 3. I share the FR-S with my wife. 4. It is nothing like the 4-speed auto I had in my accord. 5. Better MPG. If only slightly. Auto still can do burnouts. |

I've owned a number of MT cars in my life, but I'm just at a point where if i have to drive every single day in my area's traffic insanity, I'm getting an auto. If I ever decide to have a daily driver plus another car on the side, then I'd probably get an MT for the additional car.
