I would bet on a Legacy 6MT. Which is bad news, given that it'd be replacing a mediocre 5MT. I'd pick a CVT from Forester XT over that 6MT.

If we are really lucky maybe it will be an all new or at least heavily updated transmission to match the new engine.

I'm being maybe too optimistic asking for real diffs, but we did get a rear torsen from 02-07. That would be nice at the very least.

Also, I think Subaru knows that they need a 6 speed to be relevant at this point.

What if they decide to slap in another gear on the 5 speed manual box they have now the same way they added the 5th gear to their 4 speed manual box of yore?

I thought only the rear diff in the STi models were Torsen and the normal WRX had viscous units in the rear. At least until they stopped offering them in the normal WRX trim, as I recently learned.

As lame as this sounds, I'm most excited to see what the fuel economy numbers look like with the smaller engine and lighter weight. Sure there's the AWD tax, but if it can pull high 20s, that's a big feather in its cap.

It seems like VW is stepping up things with the Mk7 Golf. AWD is a nice advantage, but if it comes down to a choice of cars with similar styling, similar utility, but one has AWD and perhaps somewhat more power but the other gets 5-10mpg better and has a nicer interior, it's going to come down to handling, which is something that the WRX isn't particularly known for, and which the MK7 is supposedly a drastic improvement over the Mk6.

Well said, I like to see that they are bench marking the BRZ for driving dynamics. Granted the AWD will likely numb the steering a bit, but at least they are trying to provide a higher standard of driver involvement. The electronic power steering in the BRZ/FR-S is pretty excellent, and with the new DIT 2L engine with it's lower CG packaging, there is a ton of potential for them to make something more special then the status quo... Heck the new generation Impreza dropped over 160lbs over the previous equivalent model, (what the new WRX appears to be based on) that is a pretty big deal and bodes well, regardless of how one feels about the styling.

Derp, I was in BRZ mode. Yes it's a viscous for the older WRX.

I thought that was what the Legacy 6MT was, at least for a while?

I'm not too familiar with the transmission in the Legacy. I always assumed the Legacy 6MT was the STI 6MT.

Not even close, I know that for a fact. The STI is the only car with that beefy 6MT.
