Just had it happen yet again. Just out of curiosity i let it sit in neutral then held the clutch in and tried 2nd gear. Same thing. Stuck half way

I get this 6th to 5th grind a lot. It's steadily becoming worse.

My 3rd and 4th gear are crunchy and the car is a week old... thought it was just new-car issues, but its getting annoying and after reading this its obviously a problem.

It feels like it just needs better fluid IMO, but I don't want to use the cocktail I used before in my 5-speed Impreza tranny cause that would certainly void the warranty.

I have no problems downshifting into any gear, although 2nd needs more effort in blipping the throttle. I feel sometimes like this car only wants to be driven hard to achieve a smooth throw.

Not sure if I just suck at driving or if the car has hidden bugs in it that make the car difficult to drive.
I feel the same about my driving. I'm like arguing to myself if what I did was my fault or that was just the car. When I drove my friends Z3 for hours after class, I never once got in the car and messed up. I drove that thing smooth as an automatic. My FRS on the other hand is a different story.

Hey guys I was just wondering why do the Auto transmissions have relatively smooth gear changes without any crunching?

Do they even have synchros?

Is this a serious question?...are you trolling? In case you are serious I will try my best to explain...automatics don't have gears in the same way a manual does. They use something called planetary gear set and use clutch bands that grab each gear set separately depending on where the fluid gets directed too-these combined will be your "gears". Then there's also the fact that an automatic uses a torque converter which uses fluid to transmit power from the crankshaft to the input shaft-this acts like a clutch. So in simple terms when you start to accelerate from a stop the torque converter will start transferring power from the engine to the transmission which will then start with the 1st gear ratio via electronic servos and ecu, that will direct fluid to one side of the bands(think of this as wrapping your waist belt around a spinning round object but with one side fixed and you pulling on the other to stop the rotation of this "round object")thus grabbing that set of planetary gears which then turn the output shaft to the driveshaft, to the diff, and then finally to the wheels. When the transmission shifts it will shift the fluid to a different planetary set by applying fluid to that band and release the first, and will repeat the cylcle for each gear. Anyone chime in that knows better? I'm a little fuzzy on the details.

I think its safe to say my third gear crunchiness has gone away . I'm currently @4600 miles. Although if its cold, it may click into gear like my 2nd gear.

@5505miles
Seems like I have the same problem again with my 3rd gear. I wonder if it has something to do with the cold weather.

The car is a lot better as the trans breaks in. I'm just over 17k and the shifter is smooth as butter with a simple fluid change and a heavier shift knob. The 3 -> 2 downshift still sucks though.

Hi, I have experienced a similar issue with my 2013 BRZ. Recently in upshifting into second gear, with the clutch still fully engaged, i heard the sickening sound of syncros grinding. It was as if the gear selector missed second and locked into something between second and fourth. The grinding only stopped when i pushed the stick into neutral. I had the vehicle at the dealer for two weeks where he could not replicate the problem. He did drop the transmission to check the clutch, which he has said was ok. The car is now stored for the winter. Has anyone had this issue with a fix?

Ive been a bit worried. I grinded twice as of recently. Clutch fully depressed, Pushed the shifter from 2nd to 3rd and heard a grind and it rejected my shift. Is this normal? my fault? Ive been driving manual for over 5 years.

Not your fault.
Look up all the threads in here related to grinding.
This is not normal. Take it to the dealer so it's one more added to the list.

I agree with this. Noticed shifting 1-2 in a "firm" motion instead of granny shifting removes the crunchiness/grinding. I'm still going to change the gear oil because factory is junk...
