If looking for an affordable "sports car", and not interested in buying a FT86 now, I'd be waiting to see the new:

1. Mustang GT (2014)
2. WRX/STI (2014)
3. Nissan Z (2015)
4. S2000 replacement (2015)
5. Mazda RX-? (2016)
6. Toyota Supra (2016)
7. Toyota MR2 (2016)

Other auto makers have noticed the FT86's success, and will be flooding the market with potential competitors in the near future.

Out of the time I grew up from cars hobby. I see 4 kinds of people.

They most likely love Classic, hot rod, rare finds, cheap projects, and they never buy new or almost new. These are also the guys who do the most crazy things to their cars. They also race in the track, drag race

4/ The advertisements. These are performance shop owners. They experiment on their car, and they can do anything at ease. These usually buy brand new, almost new to experiment and compete other shops to sell their labors and products

Now the final group

5/ the wanna be. These come from all age, including 16 to 70. These read and learn about automotive in paper. Never really work on it, want to show off, Internet brag or cafe number. these often buy almost new, used, rarely brand new, and rely on group 4 to brag about their cars at their own expenses. 95% of these will end up selling their car at loss after mods, or regret big time later.

To me, you buy the car you find yourself satisfied the most for whatever you do. If you don'. Work on your car, and you buy a car to mods it using shops. You better off not buying. Because it is not for you.

An example of a 1000 Hp Honda civic. It can kick an m3 as for cheaper buy. But at the end o. The day, it is still a civic. It s super cool when it runs, but it is a disaster when it is broke, just because you cant work on it.

The majority of the consumers are group 1-3. That s why the manufacturer produces as many options as it can sell on the market.

These two cars simply don't compete in the same market and price range.

I paid 28k for my BRZ including taxes. I doubt I could get a 2 series for under 35K

You are comparing two cars at two different price points. An 8k price difference on the lower models (~33%) and a 12k difference (~50%) for the higher trim vehicles is not a small number for most of us.

Even if a $33k BRZ STI is available, I don't know how many on this forum are willing/able to spend that extra money for that extra 0-60 performance.

Considering all that, I think you have to be either naive or disingenuous to not have expected some animosity for your OP, especially from a non-owner.

On an unrelated note, how do you like your HTR Z III tires? I had them on my last car but never tracked them. Were great but I noticed a significant drop off in grip after ~20k street miles even though they were a couple MM away from the wear bars.

I considered both cars, but I drive too much and it would translate into I lose more money with bmw. A 150k miles of scion/subaru vs 150k miles bmw...resale value is very different. Btw my brother leased a Mini Cooper s and after 2000 commute miles, now it has cel and in limp mode !

Just an observation after seeing OP (who apparently loves the Twins) create a thread comparing the BRZ against the 2-series, and then from the start, quote 0-60 times. WTF? I don't think any owner on this forum bought their BRZ/FR-S for its 0-60 time. Also including things like "iDrive and arm rest" in the positives for BMW. I don't think OP understands the Twins, but w/e.

The HTR ZIII's are holding up well. I won't get anywhere near 20,000 miles though. It looks like I'm on track for about 12,000 miles with this set, but that's with track and autocross events thrown in. They don't have the traction of Z2-SS, RS3, Rivals, etc., but you can't beat them for the price (about $80/tire) and they take heat decently. They're also fairly quiet on the street which surprised me.

My only issue is I've been getting abnormal wear on the right side tires. The tread looks like it's lifting up at the edges. I ran counter-clockwise at my last two track events which is probably the reason. I've rotated my tires and have more track days this weekend. We'll see how they hold up.

Well, you forget that with the BMW, you're buying the car twice.

I switched from a 3 series to the BRZ, and I sure as hell don't miss the repair and maintenance bills.

I don't think cross shopping these 2 is that ridiculous. I personally was cross shopping several bmws with the twins.

I agree the 2 series just like the 1 series will not handle as well as the twins, but I have no idea how people can comparing the bmws to the hyundai genesis. When was the genesis ever considered a good handling car? Did I miss something?

The Genesis Coupe RSPEC handles better than a 1 Series BMW. At least that is my opinion.

As for the comparison, why not? The Gencoupe has a more luxurious interior that an FT86 and makes more horsepower and torque than a BMW base 2 series for less money.

I don't see why it would not be on the table.

I've yet to see a review that portrays the genesis coupe in a positive light compared to its competitors. Where as most bmws (Not including the recent 3/4 series) are praised for their handling and feel.

I do hear a lot of criticisms on the genesis' poor transmission and handling. The two pros you mention interior and hp/tq was far from my top priorities for my next car. If they were why would I have picked up a FRS?

If I really cared about hp/tq or even track times per cost. I think the mustang would be a much more logical choice.
