Installed Greddy Intake, kept stock snorkel.
Title pretty much says it all. I installed the Greddy Momentum intake. The instructions said to remove the stock snorkel, but the opening for the intake fit perfectly so I just kept it on. Is there anything wrong with doing so? Did I ruin the purpose of even putting an aftermarket intake on? I still can feel the power boost and torque gain, also gives it a nice engine tone too.

Sorry man, but... . Go back to stock . Install a decent drop-in filter . Remove or modify your existing snorkel for better airflow or just replace it with an HKS air duct . Do a sound tube delete while your at it . Get a tune! . Sell your Greddy And in that order! If someone would have gave me these instructions months ago, I would have saved alot of money on intakes ![]() Reason: Stock intake with a drop-in filter & tune is as good or better than any aftermarket intake If you want to keep your Greddy, just remove and replace with modified snorkel or an HKS - Get a tune if you don't already have one

Agree with @JPxM0Dz
If you don't want to modify your snorkel then taking it off is better than keeping it.

Keep the stock snorkel. It's not hurting anything. When AEM was designing their intake they flow benched their setup and with the snorkel attached it flowed around 500 CFM, which will support a bit more horsepower than these motors make. It's the only place I've ever seen an intake for one of these cars actually flow benched. It will probably support 250-275 HP if I remember the old rule of thumb from my drag racing days.

You may want to look into the Perrin 3". Looks pretty promising especially for full bolt ons.
You definitely want to look into a tune though it will wake the car up. |

So is everyone else who showed an increase in power with drop in filters on a dyno incorrect? It seems we have conflicting reports on if drop in filters make power. If filters, why not the snorkel?
And what were the repeatable gains? Something like 2-3 HP? Well within the normal variance of measurement, I would think. That's like a 1-2% difference? I mean, you can take it off if you want, it won't hurt anything.

A gain is a gain, I'm not trying to be nit-picky here but some people will want it and some people won't care. Why not be informed?
I wasn't arguing anything else so I'm not sure what you were getting at with the drop in filters.

Sure, there may be gains for other cars, but very marginal from all the tests. And like how everyone has said, get a tune; I'm running the Vishnu tune with the K&N, sounds great to me and I can feel a difference. I thought about removing the snorkel completely, but decided not to. Take a look at the point of attachment to the stock box, the engine can evidently intake heat from the engine, often referred to as heat soak. So what I'm going to do is keep the snorkel on, but cut off the fresh-air tube -- many folk have already done this. The idea is to filter out any potential hot air seeping into the intake. The stock box with a drop-in is more than enough, you can take it a step further and get a replacement intake hose (I just bought a Mishimoto). Wont have to worry about dealership giving me crap for having a new intake/engine mods. .ck |

yeah I've seen a lot more threads springing up where its about someone modding a snorkel like @Yruyur or they've mentioned that they already have or are interested in it.

Good info in this thread. It also goes to show that the engineering for this vehicle is pretty sold on the intake side for a full blown intake to not have much effect. Either that, or there is a restriction plate in front of the mani....which makes not sense on a low hp car that has no racing requirement.

The intake on the WRX/STI has long been proven to flow more than basic bolt-ons will require. Nobody really changes out the intake unless they want more sound and/or going ginormous turbo.
