RAVENOL Eco Synth ECS 0W-20

Hey guys. I found RAVENOL Eco Synth ECS 0W-20 oil at SOS oil in CPT (Observatory).

So, is anyone sticking to the 0w20 oil as per our factory fills, or is everyone jumping on the 5w30 bandwagon as per TGMO that our agents provide.

Interesting fact, I called Subaru Cape Town and they use a semi-synthetic 10w40 in the BRZ. The lady from the service department said, and I quote "Toyota are new to the boxer engines and don't know much about which oil to use" .... Riiiiiight, and the Subaru manual is wrong as well according to Subaru CPT (WTF). So to all the BRZ owners who take their car there, be warned, they using a crapy cheap semi synthetic in your car.

Thing is, I need about 500ml of topup fluid after 3000km's and I am considering doing an oil and oil filter change.

What are you guys doing regarding your engine oil ?

@ Fuzz, just remember, we don't have the freezing temperatures that the people in the northern face, hence 0W is not essential. Our oil gets up to operating temperature must quicker than them.

Planning on doing an oil change with this. It's an excellent oil.

Yeah I understand what you are saying. But a 0w still has better cold flow properties than a 5w at room temperatures.

Thing is, ambient temperatures are important, but engine design determines the oil needed. I know that some guys in warmer climates even race using a 0w20 or 5w30 with no issues in the FA20 engine. I personally use to run a 5w30 even for track days in my Honda.

I fear a w40 might be to heavy for the state of engine design.

Think I will lean towards either 0w30 or 5w30 oil to get the best trade off

5W30 is the viscosity specified for South Africa, which is what your dealer will use when doing an oil change.

If you use a different viscosity, you'd probably end up having no legs to stand on if something does go wrong.

I would understand that if you used a w40 oil regarding refusing warrantee claims, but the manual states "0w20 oil for all ambient temperatures" and "5w30 as an alternative if a 0w20 is not available"

The manual also says that High came with DRL and many other things - it's a generic manual. Go with what TSA is using, they know best unless you feel that you know better of course.

haha, yeah a 0 or 5w30 seems like the best trade off.

Anyone using the TRD Oil filter ?

Was thinking of doing an intermittent oil change at 5000km's myself using the TRD filter.

A couple of guys here are using the TRD filter. I wish somebody would test them properly so we'd know if it was worth it.

Yeah, some used oil analysis tests would be great.

Anyone know of a place in SA that can do these type of oil tests ?

I would send away a few samples as a gunny pig

I'm using the TRD oil filter - looks pretty. I fear that is where it ends for the price... That said - car hasn't used a drop of oil.
