If the risk is worth it.
Continue to dump money into grand prix in hopes it will last 2-3 more years. Or will the amount of repairs over that time exceed buying a beater? But after tax on this kind of purchase I really don't think I'll get my money worth. I think I have no choice but to keep putting money into my car. I'm expecting these repairs to be 1000-1500 Last time it was 800 and the check engine light is back! I just got it "fixed" 3 or so months ago. |

"But Ashley you can't get an expensive car!" My response: just pretend I was a slacker between the ages 22-25 |

Oy. This is a tough one; I'm not sure what I'd do. If there's anything I hate, it's throwing money at this kind of problem, especially knowing that there is little assurance that there won't be yet another four-figure repair within the next three months. Long-term, it would be preferable to me to buy a more reliable car. But, only if I could "afford" it. You have other considerations as well. This illustrates a phenomenon I've observed: It can be expensive to be poor. Maybe now would be a good time to find an affordable Miata and some winter tires. An NA or NB (first or second generation) could probably be had for a decent price with winter coming upon us shortly. At least with a Miata, any repair costs would not be totally lost as they will be in your current car. Your current car is essentially worthless, I'd guess. A Miata should retain its value quite well at this point, so long as you don't put an excess of miles on it. It would make a decent trade-in after you graduate, get a decent job, and go shopping for your new FR-S. Something to consider, perhaps. I'm sure you'll find lots of other good advice from the knowledgeable folks here on this forum. |
