A 90-mile round trip means over 20k miles a year and A LOT of gas!!
MPG is very important to me.. That is why I am trading in my Evo X which gets 22 mpg hwy, for a BRZ which will hopefully cut my gas bill down by a third... |

If that 22mpg is basically all just sitting on the throttle at 70mph or so everyday, then yea that's horrendous and under similar conditions you can probably expect 40mpg or better out of a 3.727 rear diff manual BRZ. If you try hard, you can probably cut your gas bill in half.

I'm really hoping for a rating similar to the Veloster Turbo (27/38) but I think that's wishful thinking.

Seeing that the Veloster is 1.6 but turbo direct injected, I'd expect the FRS to come in slightly lower, but not much.

official fuel consumption figures released
http://toyota.jp/86/001_p_001/spec/spec/index.html
Has different fuel economy depending on model and transmission but it looks like the G model (probably closest to scion FRS spec) will do 12.8 L/km (AT) and 13 L/km (MT) which converts to 30.1 (AT) and 30.6 MPG (MT) (US) combined cycle (urban and highway average). so, fairly reasonable fuel economy. |

The new impreza gets 18.2km/L in Japan, which is 42mpg, and gets 36mpg here, so it looks like the Japan figures are higher. It will probably be around 26mpg if the ratio is the same.

I know this thread is getting old... but based on those numbers... I did some calculations for local MPG numbers...
Compared with pretty much the only other car I could find a direct match with one here in North America on toyota.co.jp... the Scion xB. Japan xB: 16.6 km/L converts to 6.02 L/100km but xB is rated 8.5 L/100km or 28mpg here. With these numbers you can "guesstimate" 86 mpg. Japan 86: By comparing the 86's 12.4 km/L to the xB 8.5 l/100km, the FR-S should be rated at 6.35 L/100km or 37mpg |

I would to see a real life 30mpg combined (35mpg combined would be the shit). I don't see why mid to high 30's wouldn't be possible on strictly highway trips.

So I guess there is no way to convert the Japan specs to U.S. specs? If it was given in imperial mpg (U.K.) I know I could convert it...

You can't compare them because the tests are pretty different. However if anyone wants to get an idea of how high the fuel economy can practically go, may I point you towards my detailed explanations a page or two ago?
It appears these ratings are with the 4.100 rear diff...which is extremely impressive IMO, as the test cycle is not constant speed. If you use a 3.727 then you should be in the 40s on the highway. Considering that it's scoring considerably lower than the Impreza however, I think it's reasonable to expect something like er, 23/31 EPA. I'm still disappointed about the 6th gear
