And what does that part of you say, that part of you that really wants to be a self-sufficient, independent adult? What does HE say?

Just in case your dad doesn't show up... But, maybe he's waiting to see if that third "part of you" shows up, too. And maybe he's wondering for just how long he's supposed to be responsible for making the right decisions FOR you? Something to ponder, perhaps, yes?

Just the musings of an old man; not trying to pick on you.

Just someone I was seeing.
Had to break up because I knew things weren't going to be long term, and he got a job offer upstate that he wasn't going to strongly consider because of me. The job he currently has will be closing in Jan, and they offered him a good deal to relocate.
He isn't that great of a person and you can tell by the kind of karma he has in his life.
I feel so sorry for him, it breaks my heart

That was kind of you to let him know, now, so that he didn't forego the opportunity to take the job upstate.

Hmm... If you're implying that Life typically punishes the bitches and bastards of the world, I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but it is not true; quite the opposite, I'm afraid, as time will teach you over the decades. The worst of them always seem to land on their feet, no matter what. It's quite annoying, actually.

Now, Ashley...

*************

P.S. I'm glad to see that you're "tidying up" your life. I wanted to encourage you to do this, but thought, "She'll REALLY be pissed at me if I say that! So... maybe I better not." But, now that you've chosen to do it…

No, this is good, Ashley. Excellent, in fact. Forget boyfriends and SO's for the duration of your schooling. For at least a couple of good reasons.

Focus exclusively on your studies. Do the very best you can do. You earned this position as a college student through hard work, effort, and sacrifice. There was a time you didn't believe you would get here, right? Well then… Do not mess up this tremendous opportunity to succeed, and even excel. You worked hard to get here; do not compromise that.

Avoid entanglements and all the drama and distractions that accompany them. Focus on your studies. This is the foundation for the rest of your life, Ashley. There will be plenty of time for serious relationships when you're an established professional.

Secondly, Ashley, where your head is at ... there is no chance, realistically, of you finding an appropriate mate from the pool of candidates in your age group. The boys need to grow up to catch up to you, girl; they need 5-10 years. Think about that. I think you'll find I'm right. (I'm old, and I know things about life and people. You'll find "Mister Right" in good time, just not now. Besides, Ashley still has "issues" with men, right? Give it some time, for both you and them.) (And you need to understand, and stop choosing men that you do not respect. It is self-defeating, but I suspect that it is deliberate, albeit unconscious. Something to ponder. )

Now is the time to reap the benefits of your labors. Focus exclusively on your studies. It will open doors for you and repay you a hundredfold in the years to come.

The third element you omitted in your recent declaration about being able to achieve whatever you dreamed ... was making good choices, good decisions. Young people regularly undermine their own futures by making appallingly bad decisions, terrible choices.

One can work hard and devote a great deal of time to a goal, but without good judgment, without making the right decisions and choices, one may never realize those goals, no matter how hard one works. Hard work is not enough.

You're doing everything I want you to do ... even if I had nothing to do with it. (Naturally, I'm vain enough to think I may have influenced you, even if only in a small way to nudge you in the right direction. I hope so.)

Moreover, you're postponing your new car purchase, too!

Hallelujah!

I hate to see you have to wait further, but it's the right thing to do. Immerse yourself in your studies, and the boyfriends and cars will fade into the background waiting for the appropriate time. There's a time and a place for everything.

It's a rare young person who actually listens to their elders. They insist on re-inventing the wheel and learning everything on their own ... the hard way. This country is filled with young people today who are in dire straights. Not all of it, but much of it, could have been avoided.

I don't want to see you end up like our neighbor's girl next door. Massive student loan debt for a $200,000 bachelors degree in 2011, and she's now well into THREE years out of college and has yet to get a full-time job, never mind a grown-up job showing future employers that she can responsibly and reliably work and play well with others. It's a disaster, and there are millions like her across this nation, with more to come.

I started reading your posts on here last year, and I thought that I don't want that to happen to you, Ashley.

You actually appear to listen. Put the car and the boyfriend right out of your mind.

Well done, Ashley.

Now go study, kiddo. Make yours a BRIGHT future.

Oh, he's in there, hiding somewhere crying, "Don't make me be an adult!"

In all seriousness, I get what you're saying. That part of me is hard to find sometimes because irresponsibility can be pretty tempting. That's why sometimes I look to my dad to be the deciding voice because I know he'd only let me do what he thought I could handle. In the end though, he didn't say don't. He just reminded me of my desire to pay off student loans and that's good enough for the responsible side of me.

Either way it doesn't look like it matters much since the guy with the car is kind of shady and I don't like the look of it anymore.

Thank you @Porsche

I couldn't agree more.
No more drama for me, and By the new year I'll be 100% debt free, and plan to stay that way.
Me not going to college for free is a good thing, there's no way I would have this kind of work ethic and motivation in life If I got everything handed to me.
Damn, it's crazy how much I've learned in the past 2 years...

...Now if I can get great grades in all my classes I'll be the happiest girl ever!

Yup, too expensive to be honest, trying to keep this thing cheap as chips.

I'm hoping to pick one up this weekend.

I'm going home to get my 240SX registered in KS...no front license plate or emissions!
