I drove 360 miles today. Half way through the trip, I had to gas up. I have been using shell 93 octane as it is 3 blocks from my house. I pulled into a a Petro on the highway- the crickets were very loud. I gassed up with their 93, and before I got out of the parking lot the crickets were gone. The pump said 10% ethanol. I don't know if it is a coincidence or not that it wasn't the shell gas. I don't know if it is going to last or not, but happy for now am I! Imma try cheap gas locally and see what happens. I wonder if it is the detergent and additive packages of some gasoline that causes this?! My father and father-in-law both retired from a large oil refinery. My dad was a manager in the refinery, and my father-in-law was a manager in the transportation section of the refinery. Father-in-law told me that all refineries are jobbers for all brands of fuel in their region. When it is loaded on the truck or rail car to be transported from the refinery, the detergent and additive package of whatever brand of fuel is being loaded is fed into the load stream and the final mixing is the fuel flowing into a tanker truck or rail car. All of your local fuels likely come from one main refinery, unless you have more than one in your area. This fuel today was maybe 170 miles from me, and lies between where I am at and where our local fuel comes from. It is likely the same gas as I normally buy here at home, but with different additives. Hmmmm...

Very weird experiencd today with the crickets. I was running some errands and had two short 5-10 minute drives, with the crickets appearing after the first and getting louder through the second. I parked the car for about 30 minutes and then left the house, at which point they were so loud that it was intruding into the cabin, even with the radio on (it has never been this loud). Then, literally at one instant when sitting at the light, they just stopped (completely). The sound has not come back since, including through a 1 hour drive since. Very odd.

I'm thinking ethonal just prolongs it.
I am confused about how this debunks the ethanol theory. Just because it is shell gas does not mean it is ethanol free.

On a side note. Finally got around to filling my car up with E0 gas again after getting back from CO and the crickets were gone after 5 minutes of driving.

So apparently the second closest non-ethanol fuel to me is a Sunoco 104 octane; the first closest being 85. (and i use "close" very loosely as they are very out of the way and at least 45min from me)

Could there be any bad effects from trying this E0 104 octane fuel on a stock motor/tune?

I apologize in advance if someone has already asked. I only remember reading about the lower octane E0 fuels.

Although it states to use US93/98RON or higher, 104 on your scaling seems exceptionally high. I would be concerned that the high resistance to detonantion could mean slow flame travel that could damage the valves unless the ignition is advanced to suit?

Mind you I could be totally wrong!

shell "v power" 91 in canada is advertised as ethonal free, also confirmed this with two different employees. I'm not throwing on a lab coat to do some testing, but these seems pretty legit to me.

I would suspect you got some with ethanol regardless of what they advertise. Mistakes happen and they aren't going to pump out the tank.

One way to put this to bed is to measure pump output pressure. Usually noise means wear. And a pump wears its output declines.

It would take someone familiar with hydraulic fittings to rig up a gauge but if it can be shown that these pumps are losing pressure with higher miles then that could (I think) lead to lean conditions and detonation at high rpm, may take several thousands of miles.

A gauge would answer the question that's been bugging everyone, it may show no issues and then folks can just wait till you are over 40 and you will have a hard time hearing the crickets anyway
