I'm pretty sure i'm not the only one here looking for medium grip tires, i have run Hankooks Ventus V4 for two weeks and they were very good for my driving style.

Unless you are trying to drift, there is no such thing as a tire with too much grip and you don't need to be drifting while out on the street anyways. If you a poor student looking to have fun with the car, find a local club that does autocross event, it will be loads more fun than fooling around on the streets and safer for you, your car and the public in general.

These tires are not junk. They are a grand touring tire. If you don't know what that means, and that different tires have different purposes, please don't post your opinions as fact.
They are very good tires for non-track driving. If you want to set lap times, then get a tire made for that purpose. |

The Primacy HP is Michelin's Grand Touring Summer tire developed to provide longer tread life and lasting performance throughout the tire's life, as well as better braking, steering control and handling on wet roads. The Primacy HP meets Michelin's Green X standard* for low rolling resistance that confirms the tire's contribution to reducing vehicle fuel consumption and emissions of CO2 gases.
Oh boy! That sounds like great fun!!! |

Those who care about handling(and bringing out the best in this car) will want as much grip as possible period. Drifto DK supa stars that like to lose traction on public roads might get a kick out of the prius rubber their scion comes with but they sure as hell arent getting performance. Why do you care about people driving at dangerous speeds with good rubber when you yourself admit to the dangerous loss of control on public roads? C/N: No such thing as too much grip unless you prefer to drive like a _______ on the streets. Keep the 'oversteer fun' for $40 autoX days and spare us. |

I got rid of the stockies as soon as I could. I couldn't trust a Prius tire on a sports car.

I just drove in the wet for the first time. Wow. Slippery as hell on the stock Michelins. I also have two sets of wheels and stock tires (thanks, Omegared!) so I'm not sure if I can justify putting on anything sticker until I wear these guys out.

i found the stock tires pretty decent. When they got really hot, they didn't get greasy, and still gripped surprisingly well.

I don't think anyone is saying the stock tires are better then X tires. I don't think they were saying they are even good tires. What people were saying is that its fun to get sideways at 15mph. The first thing I noticed about the FR-S off the lot was its lack of grip. But then I realized that is what made the car exciting and lively to drive. Coming from a vehicle with max performance summer tires, I can appreciate the conscious decision by Toyota/Subaru with regards to the tires. They wanted the car to be lively and dynamic, they wanted people to experience the full range of vehicle control without having to attain serious speeds. For the hardcore driver crowd, these tires leave a lot on the table. But for the novice driver doing their first performance driving event, whether it be an AutoX or a track day, the lack of grip presented by the factory rubber is going to make their experience a whole lot more exciting. As they progress as a driver, and feel the tires are holding them back, then they can choose to swap them out. If anyone has attended a performance driving school, they might have had the chance to drive a car fitted with hydraulic outriggers that can lift/lower the front of rear of the vehicle to simulate oversteer/understeer. Personally, I thought that experience was immensely entertaining, and taught me a great deal about vehicle control. Driving one of the twins on a track with factory tires is akin to that experience. A good lesson in vehicle control, all without having to attain speeds that might be unsettling to some. BUT, you might be one of those people that wants all they can get out of a car. So by all means, enjoy replacing the factory tires when/if you take the leap and purchase a twin. But in fairness, increased grip adds a safety factor for a daily driven vehicle. Better tires can reduce stopping distances and improve handling in emergency situations. This and this reason alone is while I'll likely go for a better performing tire when it comes time to replace my factory rubber. But in the mean time, I have no complaints about the "prius" rubber, except perhaps for the fact they mute the cars steering response a tiny bit. |
