It went very nice. The shop I deal with did a good work. The car now shift like MT in 1st 2nd 3rd. And it is still long enogh to cruse on 5th 6th. I very happy that I dont need to keep the car on sport mode all the time.

Thanks! I'm considering this for my auto FRS too. What parts would I need in addition to the ring and pinion set? Are seals and shims included or extra? Was installation very expensive?

I bought seals and shims but I am not sure if they used it or not. The instal cost me another 300. but i think it worth it. You will not feel that the gear need a lot of time to reach the power band of the rpm.

I've got a thread going here about my final gear swap: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45217

Long story short, I've got an AT and I'm going 4.88, gears sourced from www.weirperformance.com. The carrier is currently at the shop, hopefully they can put it all together next week.

I just bought the 4.56 from weir, so when we both get them installed we can talk about it . I was looking at the 4.88 but I think 4.56 is a balance for my DD. mom going to see of a local mechanic can install it, or I might need to go to a shop.

Japan gets 3.73s in the GT86? Sweet. I hate the low ratio of the FRS and my tC. Drives me nuts yet it is really small potatoes. Just like to find something to complain about every once in a while. I wish the car had 3.73s for people going FI. Japan gets all the cools stuff . I have heard that even TRD Japan makes more aggressive parts (may not be true-just something I have read).

Thanks. I'm anxious to hear how those 4.88's work out for you. I'll be following your thread with great interest.

Wait, I just realized I just have the pinion gear.. Do I need a ring to match or does it match with the stock gear?

Yeah you need the set. The ring and pinion gear teeth are set up to mesh with each other, and they wouldn't line up right if you try to mix and match. At best you'd have a LOT of gear noise and severely reduced gear life and at worst your differential will grenade because of the slack. Not worth the risk IMO.

The only way this could possibly work would be if you ended up somehow with a ring gear that had the same number of teeth as the ring gear that was originally matched with the pinion. I don't think there are any ratios that share the number of ring gear teeth though. For reference, I know my 4.88 kit is 39:8, that is, 39 teeth on the ring gear and 8 on the pinion. 39 / 8 = 4.875 ~ 4.88.

Never mind.. I'm an idiot . The ring gear was underneath.. I know the box is heavy but i just didn't take the pinion gear out so I didn't look. Doh!

Ohhh, it's beautiful.. :p..

Found this cool video.. Almost tempted to do myself, but I think it's out of my league.
