Ever since I first heard about the issue and especially since it started in my car I wondered if it would eventually just stop doing it. I'd like to wait and see but I'm too tempted to the 2T oil.

According to Toyota the increase in friction from the ethanol is causing the fuel to aerate which is the source of the noise. If it was just friction you could imagine the offending part wearing and the increased clearance reducing the friction and the noise but aeration is another matter.

My problem is fuel. We have 93 octane gas everywhere around here, but I have to drive 35 miles to the only gas station I know of that has alcohol free gasoline. Toyota needs to fix this. We live in the USA where the green weenies make it nearly impossible for us to buy quality fuel. Toyota needs to make their car run on what we have available. The Prius was their idea, they need to fix our problem as they seem to be "on board" with the whole green movement.

Almost 14k miles right now and mine stopped around the 7k mark, I'm not alone, most near 10k plus or minus 3k, they can reappear but they're 95% gone.

Do you have a source or just a tech telling you this? There has been zero official information, this would be quite surprising considering what we know, ethanol free isn't a 100% 'solution', and when the pump was dissected most theorized it was a tolerance issue.

I read it on this forum the other day but there are so many threads on the chirps I have no idea where it was and I have looked. If it surfaces again i'll post the link here.

I think ethanol free is the answer because the chirps are unknown in countries without ethanol in the grade we need to use. Chances are the ethanol free fuel in the US is often contaminated with ethanol because it's so widely used and confusing the issue.

I thought the explanation of aeration for the source of the noise was very logical since the friction would cause the aeration.

What we need is an entirely new motor and system. I know lets go back to the old boxer motor, lets even do the 2.5 and even put a turbo on it. All the bugs have been fixed on those, shouldn't be too much modification.

Aeration in the fuel causing the chirping, welp that makes a little more sense than the clearance.

Scroll down to post number 12. If your VIN is higher/later than the number on that TSB, you have the supposed improved fuel pump. I do, it still makes cricket sound unfortunately. It seems the problem isn't fixed.

Green weenies? I don't consider myself to be politically aligned with either of the two major parties, but you should look at who is behind the subsidies farmers receive to grow corn strictly to make into fuel. I hate ethanol and everything associated with it.

I am at 12,000 miles and my noise hasnt gone away, permanently at least. It reduces on cool days and goes away entirely when I pour pure gasoline (0% ethanol) into the car. It definitely has something to do with the ethanol, no doubt. I have noticed that I can go up to about 5% ethanol before it starts chirping again. I will fill the entire tank with ethanol free, and it runs smooth and silent (and I could swear has more power and I have verified better economy). Once the tank is half full I will put Shell or SAMS/Costco club gas (10% ethanol) till its full. I can hear an increase in the noise of the engine but no crickets until the next fill up. Again, anything over 5% seems to make it chirp.

And while eth burns cleaner at the tailpipe level, it takes up quite a bit of fossil fuels to MAKE it, so really its not a "green" solution at all, its almost entirely for two reasons : 1. help farmers out 2. gives us a hedge against hostile foreign oil barons (10% less fossil fuels from the middle east never hurts... much less the e85 option on some cars). That being said, ethanol has a lower energy density per gallon that petrol, thus poorer performance and economy. In the end it costs more (unless we have an oil embargo) and provides less power, and is only marginally cleaner to burn through its life cycle than petrol. It DOES improve octane and burn control, but you dont need %10 in your petrol, 2-5% achieves the octane and burn control benefits (which ironically wouldnt make our pumps chirp) .I wont cry if its subsidies ran out and we never saw it at our pumps again.

Or ditch the boxer motor and get Honda to build us a motor. That way I could flog my car and not worry about it exploding in 50k.

My chirps showed up early, went away after a few thousand hard miles....they were gone until warmer temps and higher ethanol fuel came back around June. Had chirps all summer. I assume they will go away again this winter. I'm at 22,000 miles.
