I had forgotten that 9/11 was the National Day of Service and Remembrance until I saw it posted at the local post office. I signed the date about 3 or 4 times before I knew what day it was anyway. I might remember exactly where I was 12 years ago and what day of the week it was. But I still have to ask what day it is.

I remember exactly where I was. In grade school. Parent after parent were picking up their kids and we were all speculating what was going on. My mom worked in the city so they let me go to the principals office to try and call her. It was there I saw the images of people jumping from the towers on a TV they had wheeled in. I couldn't reach her so they let me go home with my friends mom. Eventually I heard from her, my mom and sister had to walk out of manhattan over the brooklyn bridge. I could see the smoke from the windows of my school in the bronx.

I won't ever forget it...
