Yeah people kinda made me feel bad in the past - o it sucks your starting out so much later in life
But now that I think about it I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.. I was very very undecided when I was 18, I also wasn't motivated

I never imagined a future for myself back in high school
So the fact that I'm working hard to reach these obtainable goals (the stuff good futures are based on) makes me really happy.

I don't know what your situation is, but that sounds a lot like mine. When I was 27, I spontaneously decided being an orthopedic surgeon would probably be pretty cool. I'm 28 now and just getting started on that. If I succeed, I probably have another 14 years of training and education to go.

My whole life my parents and grandma were all, "YOU HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T GO TO COLLEGE YOU WON'T HAVE GONE TO COLLEGE AND THEN YOU WON'T BE COLLEGE EDUCATED AND THEN YOUR EYEBALLS WILL CATCH ON FIRE!!!!1!!" or something like that.

So I did. Waste of fucking time. I didn't know what I wanted to do, didn't care, and made bad grades. Now I'm almost 30, just now getting an idea of something I think I might like to do, and have to start on a long path with a hack-job of a GPA.

I think the whole assumed-mandatory "get married, have 2 kids, get a degree, make the most money possible" plan is utter horse shit on the best of days. This isn't the early 1900's when most jobs involved manual labor and a degree pretty much guaranteed you a comfortable lifestyle. Most jobs aren't labor intensive anymore. We have the internet now, and all the things that come from that. You can drop out of high school and get rich as hell. You can also get a degree and be poor as fuck. Now that I'm finally to a point where I actually want to go to college, I'm simultaneously realizing college isn't nearly as necessary as they made me believe for so long.

Yep. We need to stop telling 17 year olds they need to go to college. Waste of their time and their money, putting them into debt that they won't get out of until they're married and have kids. 17 year old me didn't know squat; why let him make life decisions for now 23 year old me?

Trade schools. Industry. Skill sets that can be used...those get jobs. Degrees are nice decorations.

I think its all relative, it starts with the person for sure, if they don't know what path they want to go on going to college and spending a crap ton of a money is not the correct path. If you know you want to become X which requires a X degree then obviously thats the right path, but yea college is not for everyone by any means.

Yep. And you know what was one of the biggest motivations for me to go to college? Having one of those jobs. Except I never went to a trade school, so I don't have any fancy skills or certificates. So I'm at the bottom of the totem pole at my job of otherwise uneducated rednecks.

So just to recap...
Parents pay for 100% of college - not psyched.
Have to pay for 100% of college myself 10 years later - so psyched.

Yup. I was lucky my parents subsidized my education. I can now build up money to go back to college down the road to get ACTUAL skills since I'm not in bone-crushing debt.

Wonderful.

This.

I feel like smacking people when I'm talking to them about what they need to do and how they need to keep working for it. Their reply that pisses me off "well I'm sorry I didn't get a job with my degree right out of school like you and have it easy." Funny thing is I had to look for about 6 months before getting brought in somewhere, which is good, but it sure as hell is a long time when you aren't making any money.

Yes. It sucks your degree didn't get you somewhere, I understand that. However that doesn't mean that you don't need to bust ass to move on. Yes it sucks that you probably can't go back to school without more debt on top of what you already have.

Worst part of it is, my girlfriend gives me this shit too. She's only had temporary jobs since graduating as she got a degree in history with no teaching cert. Most of the time it gets to that point when I continue to tell her she needs to manage her finances better which means she can't buy all the things she wants.....and it just goes down hill from there.
