Aha, you made it seem like a whirlwind and you were being whisked away to the land of automotive awesomeness, which probably isn't far from the truth but still seemed a little unreal. With this post I'm sure it'll go well.

And hey, even if it doesn't pan out (you never earn back that pay cut you took) at least you have your foot in the door in the industry you are interested in, it'll be easier to stay in that field.

Definitely. Your time is the most valuable thing you have. And when you work 40 hours a week compared to enjoying yourself 40 hours a week, the pay difference is phenomenal, even if the work pays a higher $ number...

I've been at a job I was miserable at and I've been around people that were unhappy with their jobs. It's not worth it. Not only do you feel horrible, but you bring down everyone around you. Your happiness with slightly less pay will go farther than your misery and more pay.

One of the scariest things I've ever done was quit a job without having another one lined up, but I was absolutely miserable. I worked my butt off and found another one. Everything worked out and everything will work out for you

"Shady" is not what I meant at all, but never mind. You're unhappy with your current job and this has resulted in poor quality of life for both you and your spouse.

You're young and you see the grass as being ever so much greener "over there." And maybe it will prove to be true. We can hope for the best.

Your wife is happy for you, if a bit scared. Sometimes "selfishly" doing what's best for you, promotes what's best for you both.

Whatever comes to pass, for better or worse, you two did it together -- as partners.

Good for you and your wife for having the courage to make the leap.

Good luck to you both.

Can't put a price on happiness.

Misery elongates time and prolongs suffering, whilst ironically shortening YOUR time on this Earth. $8500/year is significant, but not so significant that you can't cut out the luxuries in your life. I promise that, with time, you won't even miss those luxuries if you are truly happy with what you do everyday. We need those luxuries because our day-to-day lives are unfulfilling and thusly we pepper our life with material possessions to make up for the void in our immaterial life.

Thank you sir. I may have misinterpreted what you meant. I am trying to go into this without the "grass is greener mentality" for sure. I am not expecting it to be all sunshine and rainbows, but I do know I will be doing something I am passionate about. And in turn, I hope that will equal a better lifestyle and more happiness for me, and us.

Let me know if they are still hiring. Minnesota wouldn't be that bad a state to live in. LJ @FullBlown sounds like he is going to have some local competition.

Either your work makes you happy or you work to make money to do what makes you happy in your free time. But you know, if the work is consuming your life and you don't have a chance to enjoy your life- then it is not worth it.

I think if you are unhappy at your job- it is a good sign you needed a change. Happy for you that your wife is supportive and you got this opportunity (i mean yeah less pay, but the benefits are important and its good you got them with the new job). As for finances ... there are always things you can pinch a little or cut back on in the short term. The financial hit is likely temporary until your wife is done with her stuff anyways. Congrats on the new job!
