It's not my car for sale, I'm just letting you guys know about this after seeing the article. And I figured it'd invite more discussion about the car and setup than actual inquiries about buying it.

Ok I'll bite.
I'm on board for everything (provided the price isn't absurd) EXCEPT why the fuck would you get rid of the fantastic steering this car came with? The only reasonable explanation would be that whatever wreck it was in destroyed the OEM steering and I guess that an OEM replacement would be a pain in the ass to find at best and absurdly expensive at worst compared to the multitude of MR2's sitting in junkyards that have been rear ended. This would also explain why they went for a motor swap (instead of a turbo) as something that damaged the steering would have also trashed the motor. What would be a reasonable price for a rolling chassis (provided it's been represented properly and all that's needed is a motor and tuning)? Personally I think $20k seems about right for what you're getting but they're probably looking for $30k+ Actually here's a post by the supposed seller: "No disrespect, but anyone who is looking for a build of this caliber should note that this is a 2012 chassis, and the cost of the car alone is $20K+ before it even gets a hand laid on it. Please don’t email me asking if we will take $11,000." Curious why they would pay $20k for a chassis they were going to chop up, I wouldn't have bothered paying more than $10k if I could. As for the "hate" if that's "a lot of hate" then you haven't been on the internet very long. |

The car was so new, most of the "proven" parts for racing/drifting were sourced from other chassis/manufacturers for reliability and parts availability reasons. Plus, V8s are the way to go in Formula Drift right now considering the rules and associated tire sizes you can run with it. Case in point: Ken Gushi's Greddy FRS has an EJ25 motor in it. Greddy will debut the FA20 next year due to not enough R&D on the block. -alex |

I could see $40k but that's not money I would spend on someone's discarded build, I'd rather do my own at that price point. Value is determined solely by the price someone is willing to pay. See OP, valuable discussion! Edit: I wonder how much money they got selling the seats and tranny and diff and other parts they didn't end up using, not a lot but certainly offsets the cost even if it goes into another project. |

The driver it was meant for (Otto Graven) is South African. His previous rides in FD were RHD as well.
I don't believe this is a conversion, I think it was a RHD chassis imported for race use, hence the need for "private" discussion between seller and prospective buyers. Most likely whomever that is buying the car will need to file an exemption with the DOT for race use, to avoid legal issues. -alex |
