Smile 17x8 +45 with 235/45/17 wheel rub/pop at full lock [resolved]

I installed my 17x8 +45 RPF1's with 235/45/17 super sports yesterday and found that at full lock, the wheel hits something and does some kind of pop or bump every few revolutions. Almost feels like the tyre's popping off the rim or something. Took it for a test drive and all is fine, as long as I don't turn at full lock.

Any thoughts? I'll be jacking up the car over the weekend to take a better look.

EDIT: suspension settled after 50 miles or so, rubbing n popping gone!

Curious about this, I was thinking of running 17x8 +45's with 245/40's.

It's the swaybar. Mine does it with 245 rivals, same exact wheel.

Thanks for that. I take it the solution is to just avoid full lock or go 225's? I was thinking it was because of the tall sidewalls I have (235/45 vs. the more traditional 235/40, 225/45 or 245/40) but if it's the swaybar, then I'm assuming I'll have to go 225 to get clearance.

I added a 3mm spacer. Didn't do much (still rubbed) 225's would probably be fine. However, being that it's only full lock and not rubbing anything it can hurt, I choose not to worry about it.

It sounds pretty nasty though when it rubs. Scared the bejesus out of me the first time it happened - thought the shop incorrectly mounted the tyre and it was dismounting itself.

Freaked me out too. If you pull the wheel off you can probably see the rub marks on the bar. Oddly enough, it only rubs when I turn right.

So is it the tire, or the wheel that hits the FARB?

It's the tire that rubs, mine does it too. It's not a big deal. Seems to be noisier when it's wet out.

Update: the suspension has settled after 50 miles or so and the rubbing n popping has disappeared! So now I can confirm 235/45/17 on 17x8 is fine at full lock

I am buying the exact same wheels, but will go 225 for the tires.

Can you confirm it was the tires rubbing?

Also, any chance for some pics, with emphasis on how they line up with the fenders?

Thanks!

Yep, tire rubbed at the start (only at full lock) but after 50 or so miles it went away as the suspension settled. Did a few full locks during the weekend and all is fine. Got some fender pics below. +35 would fill out the fenders more, esp on stock suspension, but would poke a tiny bit in the front.
