Picked up my Firestorm FRS a few weeks ago. Been looking around the forum. Finally posting. Living fast in Baltimore.

Two weeks ago, on my birthday, I purchased a Firestorm FRS that was sitting on a nearby dealership's lot. It was giving me that sad, puppy-dog look. I had to give it a home.

Notice I didn't say good home: It's my first manual with all the baggage that entails.

I keep hoping I show up in the Mid-Atlantic spotting thread, but no luck thus far.

CONGRATULATIONS ...and ....

First manual - hmmmm .....

Keep in mind (after the break-in period, of course), when you are cranking UP the gears, the rev limiter will keep you from over-revving the engine. However, when you are down shifting ..... it's not going to save you. So, be sure not to mis-shift (like coming down from 6th and hitting 3rd instead of 5th). At high speeds, some call that a "money shift" .....

It would be simply tragic to purchase this car as an automatic.

I've been driving automatics for a while now (15ish years), so I don't need to worry about learning all that basic driving stuff whilst struggling with 2.5 additional inputs. I have a pilot's license so this is far from the most complicated machine that I've ever been in command of.

Several hundred miles past break-in but I'm still not pushing it very hard at the moment (okay, maybe I have a little fun while merging). It would be a rather unsafe thing to do until shifting becomes natural and, well, automatic.

Just grabbed an Asphalt FR-S (stick of course) a week-and-a-half ago. First car I ever drove was a manual (luckily I had a motorcycle so I understood the whole clutch thing). This was back in the late 70's and it was a Corolla. One tip I can give you guys with manual transmissions: Brakes are cheaper than Clutches. Forget the downshifting unless there's some serious reason for doing so. Use the brakes - save the clutch!

I'm an engineer by day, so studying the basic concepts was something I did long before ever trying to operate it. At least in my mind, understanding how something works is very instructive when learning how to use it properly.

That said, I still can't shift and revmatch fast enough to even think about downshifting all the way down before a light. When it's reasonably safe, I go through the motions as practice.

Well, CONGRATULATIONS .... jcblown13 ..... on your purchase....

While I agree with you in theory ..... I still like to downshift. Why? I'm not sure. Maybe it comes from my first driving experiences with vehicles with mechanical brakes (which were not always dependable); maybe it comes from driving tractor-trailers (where downhill gearing was a good backup for the brakes); maybe I just like to shift (it's twice the fun when you shift up AND down the gears ....

Hey everyone, new here. My names Dan I live in Mountain Home ID, about 45min from Boise. Just picked up my Ultramarine FRS 6m/t base with display audio from Boise. Had an 02 Subaru Legacy B4m/t twin turbo for the last 2 years in Japan, and saw the the Brz in person before it was released in the states and knew I wanted one. So far put on 800mi on mine trying to get to 1000 before I can actually get on it. First impressions are great! Took it up through the mountains last week and was amazed at the handling and couldnt get it to understeer at all. Feels very well planted, brakes are great, and for only 200hp its very nimble and responsive. Overall so far very pleased, and the forum seems great, ready through quite a few of the threads and seem like a good group of guys.
