I saw a 981 Cayman S yesterday and it looked pretty damn sweet as it drove by. Maybe in a few years.

Yes, because theres model cars like the 944 and 924 that aren't chassis numbers, those are actual car names. Theres no BMW called the E65 being sold as the car name.

Technically, the 944 and 924 are just chassis codes as well. A 944 turbo is a 951 chassis code. Going way back all Porsche models were sold by their chassis code, starting with the 356. It wasn't until much later that there was a difference. They only kept the the 911 name because it was such an iconic name by the time they revamped the chassis.

Which is exactly why they won't do it. The 911 buyer doesn't want the cheaper the car to out-perform his expensive and more exclusive car, nor does Porsche want to lose 911 buyers/cannibalize 911 sales.

What's the difference between the 318i or the 325i or the 335i? The 1991 325i or the 2014 325i? Very different cars, SAME name. At least with Porsche the 911 line is the only "confusing" one. Just go by year until you get the hang of it.

Personally I love the older ones, I knew a guy who was asking $14k for his '68 about five years ago, now he's thinking around $25k, starting to get a little rich for my blood. Might as well start saving up for one that won't be rusting away every day...

It's still a decently old chassis... Singer starts with a 964 chassis, adds 993 engine, turbo brakes, etc. It's not an old short wheelbase like it looks like, but it's still a 20+ year old chassis.

Magnus Walker builds some awesome cars, substantially cheaper than Singer as well (a Singer 911 starts at about $500k and can go way up from there).

In the video above (with Chris Harris), the Singer price was quoted at more like $350-500k, with 500k being the high end.

I'd be surprised if prices had doubled in under 3 years, I don't know the details of their pricing scheme but I assume you can drive out the door in a brand new Singer for under $300k based on their marketing materials and various reputable reviews claiming as such.

Magnus has only sold one car to the public (he's sold a few to friends but I don't count that), and it went for way more than the Singer brochure I posted above, comparing a private hobby to an enterprise is a bit absurd imho since he doesn't keep track of costs:

You could probably build your own 901 for less than $50k if you're hardworking and lucky, maybe $100k if you go all out. If you pay someone to restore you're looking at at least $150k:

None of those options will net you a car as fast as Magnus or Singer. Or you could go the shadetree mechanic route (my plan) and be driving around town for < $35k when all is said and done, praying the rust doesn't eat your baby before you save up enough vacation time to do the metal work.
