Two things come to mind:
"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" -and- It's Porsche, they can do whatever the F they want. I saw a 981 Cayman S yesterday and it looked pretty damn sweet as it drove by. Maybe in a few years.

Technically, the 944 and 924 are just chassis codes as well. A 944 turbo is a 951 chassis code. Going way back all Porsche models were sold by their chassis code, starting with the 356. It wasn't until much later that there was a difference. They only kept the the 911 name because it was such an iconic name by the time they revamped the chassis.

It's still a decently old chassis... Singer starts with a 964 chassis, adds 993 engine, turbo brakes, etc. It's not an old short wheelbase like it looks like, but it's still a 20+ year old chassis.

Magnus Walker builds some awesome cars, substantially cheaper than Singer as well (a Singer 911 starts at about $500k and can go way up from there).

Or you could go the shadetree mechanic route (my plan) and be driving around town for < $35k when all is said and done, praying the rust doesn't eat your baby before you save up enough vacation time to do the metal work.
