Waiting for the next-gen Mustang is a big gamble. Even if Ford manages to:

- Cut the weight to 3100 lbs.
- Develop a cost-effective IRS
- Narrow the dimensions significantly (including height, which they conspicuously have not mentioned)
- Retain the 5.0 Coyote
- Keep the price gain under $3000

... there's still no guarantee it will feel as good as the BRZ to drive. Some of my biggest issues with the GT 5.0 were its steering, clumsy manual transmission, and general lack of feedback to the driver.

Unless Ford also manages to address those issues, it won't be as big of a competitor to the BRZ as some people are speculating IMO. No easy task, as I don't think any Mustang in 50 years has managed to be mistaken for a proper sports car yet.

Fingers crossed though. If Ford manages to essentially stuff a 5.0 Coyote into a BRZ chassis (retaining its handling characteristics) for a mere $3k over the outgoing GT 5.0, I will buy it in a heartbeat.

I don't see how the Stang can overcome the low center of gravity advantage of the FT86. This was one of the core design goals of the FT86 that resulted in Toyota partnering with Subaru in the first place (Boxster engine).

Ford had no choice to lower the weight due to CAFE, unless they went with a much smaller output engine. Clearly the Mustang is heading in the right direction with regards to losing weight and size, but to early to tell if they succeeded in building a car that would make me want to drop the FT86.

If you drive the FT86 for an extended period of time and then go sit in any of the GT cars, it is like night and day.. You feel like you are sitting up so much higher and you lose alot of that driver feedback. The low COG and low weight, also allows the FT86 to have smaller tires and reduces wear on brakes.

Yep, I agree. But just as I think it's foolish for people to annoint the next Mustang as a BRZ competitor based on specs/dimensions alone, I won't condemn it on the same grounds. I prefer to let things play out and see what Ford comes up over the next 1-2 years. My only real point is that matching the BRZ on specs/dimensions alone won't guarantee it drives like a BRZ.

All I am saying is if the next gen Mustang comes much smaller, lighter, with an independent suspension, a variety of engines, and looks good.(all rumored) It will be a seriously cross shopped vehicle. It may not feel as good as a BRZ, but overall in our current car society does that really matter. To blow it off just based on past Mustangs is like blowing off the BRZ based on the original RWD Toyota Corolla.

Going from the picture and if it is keeping close to the dimensions of the Mustang II I would guess the height to be about right...50 inches.

I think the FRS will follow the plans schedule listed here for the BRZ

I think it does to people who buy the BRZ/FR-S. Otherwise we'd be driving, well, Mustangs If Ford wants to steal away potential BRZ/FR-S buyers, they're going to have to nail the driving feel aspect IMO.

BTW, I'm not blowing it off based on past Mustangs, but I do think it'd be a radical departure from what the Mustang has historically been. Given how well past generations of Mustangs have sold, this would be an incredibly ballsy move for Ford, potentially alienating their loyal Mustang fanbase.

Hope you're right! Don't my heart, Ford.

Well, that article implies we won't see a refreshed BRZ until late 2015 as a 2016 model...

Which kinda makes sense based on sales...

Have you driven an M3 or an Evo? I've driven both, and honestly, an M3 is far more confidence inspiring around corners than an Evo. I'd also be confident in an M3 at higher speeds than in a BRZ/FRS, though part of that might be the tires (since the M3 comes with much stickier tires stock).

(Mustangs, on the other hand...)

Well, those make any car better

(I run those on my Cayman too - they're excellent tires)
