Yes, it's also a better car. Double wishbone front suspension, wider track width, shorter wheelbase and lighter. I spent 5 years of my life working on 350Z, G35, G37, 370Z... Honestly, not really a fan of any of them personally, but I am a bit jaded.

You sure can....but still would have the Big Weight Advantage, just like your Miata, lacks in power, yet makes up in Handling! I see all the time at Autocross, a nicely prep Miata can run same times/faster than higher hp cars!

The 370z is the better car for sure tho I was curious if the update resolved heat issues or brake issues?

yeah i get that but i think its common for people to get over enthused by handling. were talking about triple digit power advantages. the fastest production cars are all heavier than any real enthusiast would like. i have a miata because i appreciate the sport. if i were after lap times, i would probably not go with the frs. dollar for dollar or otherwise.

It's weight/power ratio that matters.... assuming all the engineers did the sensible thing with the transmission gear ratios.

^^^^ What he said. Power/weight is everything for most performance contests (acceleration, road course lap times).
That said, for outright top speed, power *is* most important. For purity/joy of driving, lighter weight wins by a huge margin (for me, anyway). For lap times, sure, a Mustang GT will be faster than a Miata, because it has much better power/weight. Anyone buying based purely on lap time potential (basically, power/weight), won't be buying an FR-S, BRZ, or Miata. But they'll be missing out big-time on the fun of driving a reasonably lightweight (or at least not obscenely overweight) rwd sports/sporty car. It is frustrating that no one builds a reasonably priced, reasonable weight rwd sports car with decent power/weight. Mazda builds a 265 (or whatever) hp Speed3. Why no 265hp Miata?! Why no 265hp RX-8?! Now, same thing with FR-S/BRZ. Doh... Last edited by ZDan; 01-21-2012 at 08:29 AM. |

Track width, OK, but then again I'm not a fan of increased bigness... Shorter wheelbase looked promising, as the 350Z's rear wheels were shoved way aft for no apparent reason like some fwd car, and its weight distribution suffered for it (~54/46). But whatever weight distribution benefits the 370Z got from moving the rear wheels forward must've been offset by increased weight up front, because it has the same f/r weight distribution! Which is pretty poor for a 2-seat FR sports car. Lighter weight? This was promised, but not delivered. The lightest stock 350Zs weighed 3300 lb., and the lightest 370Zs weigh the same amount. One huge advantage of the 350Z is that you can put it on the track and drive it for pretty much as long as you want. 370Z, one or two laps without the oil cooler, 4-6 laps with. LAME. What Nissan *should* do (IMHO, of course): Build a new 250SX similar in spec to the FR-S/BRZ. Tweak the Altima 2.5 4cyl for 225 or so hp. Base a NEW smaller/lighter-weight Z on that platform, with the engine and front seats moved way aft on the same wheelbase (no rear seats of course). Offer the 2.5 n/a and turbo'd. If the oversized/overweight 3.7 V6 is what's causing the current Z's nose to sit so ridiculously high up in the air and giving it poor weight distribution, DON'T USE IT. If it must have a 6, make one that's smaller/lighter. Ferchrissakes keep it light and keep the front end LOW. Last edited by ZDan; 01-21-2012 at 09:11 AM. |
