Age 70 here and I suggest you look into purchasing/making a center console armrest.

If your new car is a manual, be aware that the gear shifter slots are real close together ....... be especially careful on the downshift .... . Unlike the old floor board shifters, where 2nd gear was anywhere from the steering column to the glove box ....

Since you're 70, didn't you mean "...ON the steering column"?

52 here, this brings me back to my youthful days, of Datsun 240 Z's and 510's, Celicas, rotary Mazdas..

Well, actually not .....

My first vehicle was a 1937 Chevrolet pickup truck. It had a really worn out transmission (a 3 speed floor shift). 1st gear being positioned at the lower/left. You could hit second gear by pointing the floorboard shift lever towards the 11:00 to 2:00 o'clock position (1100 - 1400 hrs for you military folks).

My second car was a 1948 Chevrolet which had that new fangled column shift ......

I am curious about whether I will feel the need for a center console. The only one I might be interested in doesn't seem to be available now.

I drove a manual transmission FR-S before committing to mine. It was the sweetest shifting car I have driven and I will be trading in an Acura TSX that is very slick shifting. Not every car I have owned had a manual transmission but a quick recollection totals the manuals at about 8 but not enough of those were rear drive. The rear drives were an Opel Cadet, Mazda RX2 and Toyota Celica. That RX2 was something.

One of the most fun cars I owned was a new 1972 Honda Civic FWD. I lived in the high country of Colorado at the time and did lots of skiing and kayaking. The 50 HP Civic hauled me and three friends and their boats and gear over the high passes just fine. 200 HP is adequate for me. No matter what the HP someone will have more.

Well, maybe you won't want an armrest in the center. However, my co-pilot (wife) and I found this one to be comfortable and wide enough for two.

64 (already). A few posts ago I slammed British engineering. Though I was thinking of Lucas Electrics (anyone my age knows the terror these two words strike in the hearts of car lovers) I got a couple responses defending the British with inventions like radar and jet engines. I couldn't agree more. There's the Merlin engine. And Lotus cars.

As a tweener in the early 1960s I became a huge Lotus fan and I even made a drawing of a dream car that recently surfaced in our basement. The proportions are a tad goofy and Lotus NA headdquarters are inexplicably moved to Denver, but the car's basic layout is eerily predictive of the FR-S (front-mounted 4-cylinder boxer engine, rear drive). The modest power and acceleration are fairly typical of standard sports cars back then. And my dream car even came standard with windshield wipers, undoubtedly made by Lucas.

That is very cool. Looks eerily similar to jaguar. The schematic for your cooling system would look "goofy" with that noise. But, still a sweet find and quality rendition.

This thread reminds me of a happening back in 1982 that I've stated before. My wife and I were out looking to buy a new car and were at a Volvo dealership. I was impressed by the test drive we were allowed to take together without the presence of a salesman. We pull back into the lot and I said to my wife; "I like it, what do you think?" She responded;" let's wait till we're old before we buy a Volvo." We went across the street to check out the Toyota dealership (we had never checked out a Japanese car before) and left with a new Celica GT.

We still haven't bought that Volvo and I doubt we ever will.
