So good news and bad news depending on how you look at it. I had the dealership take the car up so I could look at it since the salesmen and service department had no idea if it was actually a cat back or just an axle back.

It appears to actually be a cat back, just something they made up particularly for Toyota. There are not any markings, but the flange past the cat is different from the flange on the Subaru/Toyota pipe with the cat.

Good news, it is a cat back. Bad news, that means there is no ground to getting the commercial Borla cat back system that does have HP gains.

The 'regular' Borla system can be had for less than $699...

I picked up a photo of the "system" from the dealer and it was only an axle-back. I'll see if I can dig it up later tonight and get it posted.

No, I didn't think about it at the time. I was just confused whether I should be happy or not.
The pipe behind the muffler box didn't look terribly different from the pipe attached to the cat, but the connecting flange was different on the two sides. The Subaru pipe had sharp turns and cuts while the pipe leading into the exhaust had a flange with a larger radius of curvature at the lip. Looked like different manufacturers.

Trying to find pictures. The pipe leading from the exhaust had a flange similar to this one:

Eh, this is the best example I've been able to find and I don't feel like scouring google for another 10 minutes. The flange on the right you can see that the upturned part isn't continuous and looks sharper like they were rectangular cut-outs and then just bent up. That's what the Subaru pipe looked like.

Now, I can't say 100% that it was catback since maybe Subaru just used pipes with different flanges (no idea why they would have two different manufacturing methods there), but it was enough to convince me while I was there.

Subscribed, I got this exhaust for free because it was preinstalled on the car I wanted and I refused to pay for it by telling them I didn't want an exhaust.

I'm overall pretty content with it but id love to hear of other parts in the system we can replace for actual gains. Any input?

Here's the picture I received from the parts department at one of my local Scion dealerships. Sorry for the quality. They had a pretty crappy printer.

edit: I forgot to mention: I sent Borla an e-mail asking for additional information.

Just a quick update to say that Borla never responded to my inquiry. Not a very good first impression...

I'm just gonna hock it or trade it for stock exhaust. it's not a bad piece if you want some extra grumble but it's definitely not a cat back lol. if you want to argue with Toyota and try to get money back, good luck but I'm top lazy

I got a great deal on the car used. I'm not that worried about it.
