Terry Dyson is like hiring a personal tribologist to work for you. Blackstone may point out that you have elevated wear, but Dyson will provide audio commentary on each reading and help you pinpoint the cause for the wear (if it's actually wear and not still break-in noise). He'll also help you choose the best oil for your application.

Yea I'll consider that. I plan to change the oil at 7000 miles and I'll take another sample to send off. I figure that should be good for comparison purposes.

I figure I'm still fairly low mileage and this will be only the 3rd oil change i've done in its life. I think it should straighten up after this, but we'll see.

Motul 300V. Aftermarket cold air. High Si content still present, possibly due to the filter of the cold air.

Here's the UOA from my BRZ's first oil change, 5,500 miles on the factory fill. Also worth noting I gained a couple mpg after the change, using Toyota 0w-20.

Are any of you guys taking the car to the dealer for oil changes? I really don't feel like scheduling, taking it down there (35 miles away), waiting around, etc… and don't mind doing it myself. Is that pretty standard? Anything special with Subaru's (or Toyota's) "dealer care"? I'm at ~1600 miles and wanting to do an early first oil change because of all the metals that mix in during break-in… I've heard of some advising first oil change before 500 miles for those reasons…

Just wondering…

From what I read, the oil changes are very easy to do on these cars. But don't be in a rush to change your oil early. Just look at the above good oil analysis at 5,500 miles on the factory fill. The metals there are measured in parts per million. It's not like there are huge chunks of metal floating around. The info that you hear about changing the oil early is from 1979. The factory fill also has additional additives (molybdenum and a little more ZDDP) that are beneficial for break-in, so I wouldn't be in a rush to change it.

There really isn't a consensus on this (or any oil topic) so do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

You can change the filter if you feel really concerned, but its not necessary to change the oil that early. I would wait until at least 3000.

Modern engines don't benefit from early oil changes which is why they are no longer specified. Put another way, modern engines take longer to fully break in and actually need the factory fill oil for longer. The oil filter takes out any particulates that would be large enough to cause any problems. Metal "bits" that could pass through the filter do no harm whatsoever. Bits in the oil cause problems only if large enough to disrupt the oil film inside a bearing.

Unless you could flood the engine with a fluid moving at a reasonable rate, I don't see what flushing would do. At best it would clean out the oil pan.

if u left drip open and just dumped some new oil through it wouldnt that flush it or u need something more high powered to actually flush?

The oil fills almost straight into the oil pan, just off the top of my head it may go through the drivers side head. So you wouldn't be flushing the entire engine anyways by just letting it drain through. If you wanted to flush it, you would at least have to fill the oil, drive it around for a bit and then drain it again, but whats the point? The oil filter is there to catch any debris.

Thanks for adding to the thread! Any reason you went with the Toyota oil instead of Subaru?
