From a legal standpoint, they're marketing the car as a vehicle built for track duty. Anyone who takes this to court will probably win their case. Slap a supercharger or turbo on and you're probably SOL, but a basically stock engine with just a catback?... Subaru is seriously hedging their bets financially hoping people won't take the time and money to fight a few court battles.

I'd contact the Attorney General. They'll sometimes take on a case for free. Subaru and Toyota/Scion are going to seriously damage the reputation of the 86 if a bunch of owners start filing claims with the Better Business Bureau, taking cases to common pleas (costs Subaru big bucks paying lawyers >$100/hr), and lose revenue of potential buyers staying away from the brand because they can't trust warranty will be honored...

IMO, this should be a service bulletin and potential recall.

Btw, I had a SUBARU-BRANDED flier with a free year SCCA membership in the glovebox of my 05 STI when I bought it. I'm surprised the 86 didn't come with the same considering all of the track marketing.

I would seriously look onto anything that CSG Mike posts with much skepticism. If you take a few steps back and try to see this "issue" in a broader perspective you see that 99% of posts on DI seal problems or "engine fails" and "engine blowing up" originate from his (and regal's) posts.

Though I do understand CSG Mike's almost sinister approach, at the end of the day, cases like his are negligible and you should not fret.

Its only negligible if it doesn't happen to you. Keep driving her like grandma or buy a 2013 build date and folks with 2012's who drive in the power band will just slowly fade away. That's Toyota's strategy.

Let's face it the majority here aren't enthusiasts and don't drive in the power band or even know how to.

Any enthusiast looking for a used '86 should check the build date sticker on the driver side sticker, if it says 2012 walk away.

Your ASSumptions and myopic view on things are just plain ridiculous.
One only has to look at the numbers of supposed DI failures to see how non-pervasive the problem is. Your hatred for this car and the OEM is so evident in your posts.
To say the owners of these cars are not enthusiasts and to think they don't know how to use the power band.. Is insulting to the real enthusiasts who track and drive their cars like sport cars, many who put hours of time and money into their rides.. And without incident, or failures.
Just because you had a possible warranty issue you couldn't handle... You feel it necessary to take down the OEM and everyone else who enjoys their car without issue.. I almost feel sorry for you.... Almost.

Nope, just a guy who spent a lot of money on a sports car who likes to drive it like one.

I wonder if you and Mike get paid to post?

The OEM is drawing "hate" because they deserve it. Those of us who actually use our sports car for sports (vast minority) and took a leap of faith as early adopters shouldn't be hung out to dry by having to keep the earlier software with a known problem. Toyota is releasing newer cars with the reflash so in my mind that IS acknowledging the problem w/o actually coming out and saying it.

I'd rather proactively address a known problem instead of risk having the snapping start at a paid event and have to waste the rest of my day getting the car towed to a dealership who shoulda handled their biz in the first place.

I test drove the car before I bought it.. I had a good idea what I was getting into..
That it used premium fuel and has a nonlinear torque curve.. That it is a rebadged sube for the most part. So unlike you.. I don't complain about the tq dip, bash the OEMs, engineers, warranty.. and complain about using premium fuel... Spread rumors about Inevitable DI issues and short engine life.. , scions demise and all the other sky is falling BS you spew..
I like this car.. I like the scion brand that brings me good value for the money..
I drive it like its meant to be driven every chance I get.. Life is short.. Especially at my age.. To be whining and complaining about something YOU had complete control over in the first place.. Actually speaks volumes about you..
So excuse me for liking the car and the company I bought it from.. I guess
I'm just one of those non enthusiasts that don't have a clue..

I find CSG Mike to be an intelligent, experienced, skilled, straightforward and honest young man. Were I in the market for the products and services that he sells, I'd buy from him unhesitatingly.

He drives pretty well, too.

When Mike talks … I listen.

They are not negligible to those who track their cars. A motor loss is a big deal, and the car is brand new. @CSG Mike doesn't own the CSG BRZ, he doesn't even need to post about this stuff. As he said he is the messenger. This is the first year the car has been out, all that you read is the groundwork for whats to come over the next few years. Chances are, most people wont have the issue, but their are a few owners who will. The thread is meant to be an informative warning. At least thats my interpretation.

If you go to any forum and look at the begining posts from when the car first came out, I'm sure you will find similar threads. Its all a part of the process.
