I think @CSG Mike has some high end Teins on his car. And he is a serious track guy.
That being said, I think Tein did themselves a bit of a disservice by chasing low-end market share. Pretty much every low price coilover seems to be crap, Tein included, no matter how many Megan, Stance, BC uneducated fanbois yell across the internet. I think disappointment in Tein comes from a higher expectation, as well as the majority of coilover buyers have ZERO clue about what they want, what they need, what they have, and whether they can afford to meet their real requirements. The difficulty for for Tein is ignorant buyers buy brand, whereas to get a good product from Tein you have to know what you want from them, since they carry a wide range from the irrelevant drop coilovers, to very advanced remote reservoir dampers that include automatic compensation for the dampers oil temperature. And as to the customer service development issue, I think the OP of that thread is not telling the whole story, or just has an unnatural sense of entitlement. He states in the thread that he did not meet the original requirements he agreed with Tein on, and rescheduled. But he expected Tein to adhere to the agreement when he didn't. He did not meet agreed schedule so was offered a reduced incentive, not nothing. Fair in my eyes.

I'm not looking to improve handling. Want to keep it somewhat comfortable, and just lower it.
If anything, I'm intentionally making my car handle worse, to make it more chuckable. I want coils to lower the car, and to have height adjustability. Not rock hard crazy high spring rates, for track racing. My car will almost certainly never see the track. I have a dedicated track car for that. Here's my blasphemous plans for my suspension. More low maybe 30mm front 35mm back, but retain as much comfort / suspension travel as possible. Stock top hats to keep 'clanging' away. Whiteline camber bolts, to hopefully get 2 degree f camber Rear camber should be about the same Whiteline adjustable front swaybar Whiteline extra heavy duty adjustable rear swaybar I've already got the whiteline gear coming. Depending on what alignment shows at desired height, may need to throw in some front lower arms for more caster, and some arms if toe is not near zero. Basically, I'm addressing thre issues I have with stock setup. Height, front rollover outside tyre, weak rear sway. Keeping the important things adjustable do can fine tune. Yes I'm intentionally making car oversteer easier. Yes I'm sure that's what I want. If cheap teins are indeed so bad, I will replace. But at this stage, I don't think the difference between cheap teins and expensive anything else is doing anything (that I want out of the car) other than lighten my wallet. |

Have you already made your mind up?
Every car with teins fitted (generally imports as they arrive off the boat from Japan), had had a hideous ride, almost feeling like it's riding on the bump stops. This may just be down to kids choosing the wrong springs or it could just mean crap suspension. I've experienced bc's on an 86 with 4k springs all round and the ride was arguably better than stock, however I didn't drive it with anger so not sure how handling was affected. Laws of physics dictates lowering the car does not improve ride and handling together! |

Big thing for me is local agent, which tein has. Spending $600 just in shipping to send my coilovers overseas to be rebuilt does not compute. Edit - tein street advance is 5kg F and R. Which I think will be ideal, seeing as rce yellow springs are 4.5kg spring rate. FYI have looked at rce yellows, by time they're landed, they cost over $700. And, as said above, no adjustability. |

Here's a little story.
My girlfriend and I went to a new restaurant the other night. The food was good, and service was ok. But at the end of the meal, we knew we wouldn't be back. Why? It isn't because we thought the place was bad. It's because there are so many better restaurants in the area that there isn't any desire to go back to that one. So while Tein's suspension products may have their good products to balance out their bad products, there are so many better choices out there that they just come up "meh". There just isn't really a good reason to consider them. |

Had the Tein SS with camber tops on my DC5 Integra before I went to Zeal Function X - from what my experience with low end Teins (SS and my mates Basic) - you can definitely find convenience in adjustability of height but don't expect anything magical in terms of handling. If your mind is set on it, just pull the trigger. Teins just don't stand out anymore to me and probably to many others - resulting in lack of results

Tein's have always been bad. Over sprung garbage. But if you want to lower your car for cheap and don't care about handling, ya go right ahead...

Until you state which models you think suck so hard, your statement is irrelevant. It's like stating that all Toyota products are slow pieces of shit with no room inside because you only used the Tercel as your reference and disregard the Supras, Camrys, Siennas or Tundras that would be more suited for your needs because you can't afford then. Stupid.

I'm reading a lot of opinions, but nothing that backs them up.
"There's better options out there" 1. Like what? 2. Why are they better? 3. What (specifically) is bad about Tein? (Not, I've heard this, or Ive driven on a 2nd hand set and they were shit, or dumbed-down restaurant analogies) Facts. I just can't accept that a brand like Tein gets to the size that they are, by continually putting out 'over sprung garbage' <-- And, how does that even make sense anyway, as the purchaser YOU choose the spring rate. The Street Advance kit is 5kg F & R. Everyone wanks over RCE Springs in standard shocks, and they're 4.5kg F & R. I'll requote myself... Quote:

Go here, ask questions. CSG Mike has Tein SRCs on his car. RCE, Robispec and CSG Mike are very helpful with suspension advice. RCE seems to hold the opinion that out of the box damping from the Japanese companies is not well suited to rougher North American street use. There is a degree of personal preference even in higher end use, but all 3 of those guys make a good effort to explain why.

As previously mentioned, yes, we use a set of high end Teins on our car. We made this decision based on suspension choices that were available at the time, and we are constantly re-evaluating our decision; we have absolutely no problem moving on to another product if we find something that has a better value to us. Having a HUGE FR-S/BRZ population in Southern California, and one of the largest track populations in the world, I've had the opportunity to drive on virtually every setup available through meets, and quite frankly, just asking people if I can take their car for a quick few mile drive to feel out their suspension. EDFC is not a toy. It's for convenience with damper adjustment. It allows me to change damper settings *on the fly*. Feel like I need more damping cuz I'm hitting the twisties? I hit a button. Road is super smooth and I don't need as much? I hit a button. While the FR-S/BRZ has easy access to damping adjustments, not all other cars do. My s2k is the perfect example. To get to any adjustments on the driver's side rear shock, I have to move the fuel tank line out of the way. (WTF!). EDFC allows me to just push a button instead of having to remove everything, just to get to that one adjustment. |
