Clutch kick is simply using the friction of the clutch disc (kick) to overcome to traction of the tires, so you break the tires loose. Assuming a normal clutch and stock type tires, you can break traction by dumping the car at a stop, and you can do the same when the car is in motion.

Start a turn by turning into a turn like you normally would or a little more aggressive (but not much) . Come into it faster than you think is possible, but within reason. Yank that olé ebrake if necessary. You will then and I'm not kidding, let go of the steering wheel. The cars momentum will point the tires in the right direction naturally. You then have to get used to feeling when you need to start bringing the wheel back to center.
Don't forget, e-brake (side drift) still requires usage of the clutch pedal to disengage the drivetrain. Otherwise you're just slowing down the car without losing traction.

I did just that, by accident (fortunately in a straight line) a few weeks ago. :P

Having only ever driven automatics prior to my BRZ, I was really surprised by it -- I've squealed tires from a stop before, but never while already doing 30mph.

I feel like you're asking how to wheelie on a sports bike you just bought, learn to drive and master your vehicle first. A lot of questions will be answered in the form of experience.

Most people experience this when upshifting from first to second a tiny bit too fast while under WOT acceleration.

Well thanks everyone. This has been very helpful. I don't want to seem overzealous. I call it drifting because I don't know how else to refer to it. I just want to learn to do things better that don't involve going as fast as possible.

If there are starter drills and basics I need to learn first, that's great. I want to do those things. I just don't know where to really begin. So forget the drifting I guess. What comes first? I have only driven FWD family cars before this, so where do I need to go?

Didn't Tiff Needell do some pieces on Fifth Gear about how to slide a car around? I recall a blue M Roadster roasting the tires. He started with doughnuts, then how to drift in circles, and eventually moved up to 360's.

I've seen "WOT" a few times -- what's that stand for?

This is what happens when you try to drift before learning grip:

Go to the drifting thread.

Some of the comments in here are already leading you in the wrong direction.

Also...
No reason to buy drift bible when 47 people have uploaded it onto YouTube.

While I can certainly appreciate that, its not an attainable joy for me. I don't have either the time or the money to go to the track. I live in Columbus, OH and the only track around me(Mid-Ohio) costs like 300 a day for hot laps and such.

That's just not feasible. What is feasible is finding giant empty campus parking lots and playing around on those. Especially after some solid rain, when the road is wet and oily, its a blast. For my money, that's more fun than 0-60 time can be or top speed can be when OH cops are so strict and its like 55-65 everywhere.
Mid Ohio is definitely not your only option.

First off, if your interested in drifitng, check out http://www.ohiodrifting.com

They have threads with all events that are going on in ohio. Specifically you might be interested in this thread, which lists all the dates they have events at Columbus Motor Speedway. I've never been to one of these myself, but I have a few friends who have been to some of the practice events they run.

If you want other options for having fun with your car in a reasonably safe and completely legal way, I suggest taking a look at SCCA autocross. More info here. It is about speed, but it's also about control and it's a sport that doesn't have to break the bank. You can put as much or as little money into it as you want. In fact we have an event tomorrow at OSU Ackermann lot as well as one at National Trail Raceway on September 15.

If you don't know much about autocross I'd suggest coming out and watching at least once. Spectating is free and provided you are over the age of 16 you are more than welcome to ride along with people and get a feel for what it's like. If your interested shoot me a PM, I live in Reynoldsburg and go to just about every SCCA autocross in our area. We have quite a few twins that come out to play with us and the class we run in has been very competitive this year with most of us having no more than upgraded tires.

Autocross. The skills you learn there translate to virtually every type of driving you will ever do in life.

More importantly: even if you just learn autocross in a FWD family car, or even an SUV, you will know/feel how a car rolls and pitches as weight transfers from one end/side to the other, and you learn car control.

Track days are too hard because the risk of rolling a car is very real (and high if you drive wrecklessly), whereas autocross only ends up with a few cone marks.

The key here is to NOT learn how to slide the car, but rather learning how to control the car. Once you learn control, then you can control the car to slide (induce a slide by feint/manji, side brake/ebrake, power oversteer, clutch kick, weight transfer, trail braking, etc), and controlling the slide by steering and throttle inputs.

PS. Be careful it gets addicting, just got a ticket for drifting lol
This ^^^ keep it out of the streets though even if its safe to do so.
