Mine has this same sound. It appears to be when the tranny is being loaded at low RPMs ( around 1k or less). I have noticed it for months now and am not concerned. Just checked this thread to make sure I am not the only one. I will report it to the Toyota Dealership at my first oil change. As long as we keep the dealerships aware and they document the complaint. We are all in good shape. Enjoy the driving and don't think much of this. I heard another FRS in my city that had the same sound when he took off btw.

I hear the same rattle as described.

I just got back from the dealership to get the parts ordered to remedy the chirping noise. While I was there, I described this fluttering, or rattling noise, and demonstrated it the shop foreman while we drove around the area. From our observations, it happens under (but not limiting to) these conditions:

-Air Conditioner turned on
-Decelerating from anywhere above ~35 mph
-Transmission in neutral
-Clutch engaged (pedal depressed)

As the RPMs drop, it initially settles around 1000, then dips to ~700. It'll then dip again to ~600 and the rattle happens, only for about a second. When it stops, the RPMs return to ~700. The foreman agreed that it mostly happens when the AC is on and the clutch engaged because of the extra load the engine has to handle. The dealership didn't have a MT FR-S to duplicate at the time so I told him I would monitor the rattling until I return for the high pressure fuel pump replacement.

Got mine checked by the Dealer twice already and got on the phone with some SOA people and said it is a normal sound the the car makes. The service tech. was even ask try on newer BRZ's in the lot and they to produce the same sound, most of the time slowing down on neutral or going to a stop.

I had the same noises in my other sporty type cars.. When u push the clutch in, you disengage the gears in the tranny , so no noises.. When youu start off at low rpms.. U get that bouncing ball bearings noise in a can sound..
No.

Pushing the clutch pedal in does not disengage any gears. It decouples the clutch plate (transmission) from the flywheel (engine).

oh here we go.. another internet scientist..
it stops the input shaft of the tranny doesnt it.., it stops any gears from being able to spin.. so back to my point.. it stops the noise from the tranny.. geezz

The same problem happens here when I brake in neutral.

I think might be the transmission. When the car slow down, the shift knob might shake and the shift might touch the gears inside. It will also happen when you touch the shift without push in the clutch.

Most people are just hearing the flywheel rattle. So far as i know it's a dual mass flywheel and as such has a resonant frequency that causes the respective components to vibrate or shake - this is particularly evident in the 1600 - 1900 rpm range with low to moderate load on the engine (coasting in 2nd gear through a parking lot). This shaking causes the springs within the flywheel to create noise.

I have the rattle noise as well. My car is at the dealer now getting a few other things fixed. They don't know what the noise is. I couldn't duplicate it for them so I showed them a video. Has anybody got this fixed or been told what the issue is?

Bringing this back up as I'm noticing the exact same rattling on my car, It is brand new and the break in hasn't happened yet. I am reassured by the posts of much more experienced people on this thread but I was wondering if Subaru/Toyota have said/found anything about the issue or came out with a fix?

I have it too, exactly as described by others, rolling to a stop in neutral.. Please keep this thread posted if a solution is found.

Just in case it contributes to the thread, I just got a brand new 2015 Scion FR-S and it too has the rattle noise when coming to a stop in neutral.

I do also get the same noise. After talking to a few different twin owners, they say the noise just comes with the car.

Look at where the transmission is mounted!

The 1st gear "thump" due to the diff is also normal.

I just picked up the 2015 Series.Blue on 7/31. Had to drive across state afterwards to attend a funeral. I put up 650+ miles during the trip, & noticed this rattle mostly when slowing in idle, but also a similar noise occasionally when shifting gears, so it's still happening w/ 2015 models.

Good to know that it's probably normal, but I'm going to mention it to the dealer anyways for documentation sake. It is quite annoying.
