I would assess it is because of the design and high compression, if the said comment was true. It's a little annoying but that's what a loud stereo is for :P
Strange then that the same engine doesn't chirp in Australia or Japan where ethanol is very rare?

That's a lie to get rid of you. How many Porsches have you heard chirping? VW Bugs? Subarus? All predominantly use boxer engines and none of them chirp (unless there's a belt issue).

It's the fuel pump. Whether or not it's "normal" is up for debate, you're safe to keep driving it and ignore it but it is NOT because of the boxer engine layout.

That would be the in-tank "low pressure" fuel pump you would be replacing which is not what the chirp is from. The high pressure mechanical pump is what makes the sound and, as far as i know, no aftermarket company has made replacement.

Got crickets repaired at 3K miles. 5K ish miles later, still trying to induce the crickets with heat & Shell 91 octane, which seemed to cause crickets previously. Maybe once or twice my wife thought she heard it, but I haven't yet heard it myself. We're trying to get it back consistently so we can get it fixed again if it is in fact starting to cricket.

BTW repaired at Toyota of Poway.

My Update......
I've been using Ethanol Free fuel in Canada since June, and honestly, my engine has never been quieter. No crickets.
All Shell 91 in Canada is Ethanol Free.
Some Costco have ethanol free 91.

I have read many posts about these crickets, and for the longest time I never heard anything from my engine.

Until today. Very noticeable.

Is it just a nuisance, or a sign of problems ahead? Should I have the dealership fix it now(if there IS a fix), or wait until the warranty's almost up?

If it's not doing any harm, I'll just live with it. Maybe name my car Jiminy.

No.

BTW: Been using 93 octane since I got it.

I haven't heard/had any issues relating to crickets. Waiting a bit for a definitive answer on fix, then I'll go in and get it fixed with the oil change.

At this point, all evidence points to it being a nuisance only. Nobody has had a pump fail yet, and we have some owners approaching 15k-20k miles.

Some people have had the pump replaced as many as 4 times, and the chirps have come back every time (although E0 does seem to help most of the time). Its more hassle than I am willing to deal with, so I am waiting to hear of someone that goes a few fillups of E10 with no chirps.

Had my oil change done yesterday and they had to order a new pump. Still all the same part numbers though. With all these members on multiple pumps with the same issue debating on waiting for an official fix.

Figured I'd contribute. Picked up my BRZ a week and a half ago, crickets showed up right around 500 miles. May 2013 build date. I'm not concerned about it.
