Everytime you shift, you use the synchro. How you shift can put more wear on them of course but synchros, like clutches, are wear items. Heel-Toe or rev-matching in general doesn't elongate the life of your synchros so much as it improves the smoothness of the engine disengaging and re-engaging with the transmissions as to not upset the balance/flow of the car (that lunge you were referring to).

Heel toe
I honestly can't tell the difference between shifting in sequence. Than just skip a gear. Because in everyday driving there is always cirumdtances where you have to suddenly brake fast rather than the anticipate speed you are going to take a single corner. Say the dumb azz in from of you floor the brake just to take a 25 mph loop. So my speed would drop from 45 in 5th gear to 25... And I am already in the process of turning.

I've always skipped gears on the way down, never any issues doing this. Some pros do, some don't.
There is more than one way, it's not a question of "right" vs. "wrong". |
