Will Subaru cover a cracked airbox because of my ignorance?

I decided to DIY and replace stock air filter with a drop in K&N air filter. I cracked the lower side of the airbox I can feel the rubber seal of the air filter.

Do you think I can get it replaced under warranty? It's only a month old...

Just mention it at your next scheduled maintenance, you don't have to lie - just say "I noticed the airbox was cracked".

In reality? No. How was it broken? Plastic doesn't just split that way without force, and the dealer will want to know who cracked open the airbox.

But to be honest, don't be cheap and man up. It's people like you (wanting to abuse warranty) that make it harder for the rest of us to get warranty coverage. See the other threads on the first page in this section for some perspective.

Warranty is there to cover defective parts, not save your dumb ass from rookie mistakes.

Save it with the name calling, brah. I HAVEN'T HAD ANY ISSUES getting my warranty covered and until I DO, stop bitching at someone who made a mistake. It happens. All of us were "rookies" at one point in time. Go preach to people who care.

I've made the same mistakes before, and I learn from it by just fixing the parts myself or buying used parts off someone else to fix this mistake.

I'm glad you're able to fix your car on Toyota's dime.

And I am preaching to those that care. Specifically guys that are posting threads here about issues with dealer warranty and the manufacturer reps that may be lurking on forums.

I'd rather be the vocal minority speaking out against this type of warranty abuse, if only to show that SOME enthusiasts don't milk the system for freebies.

My car has never been fixed on Toyota's dime.

If a dealer is going to void a warranty, we have seen them doing it for far more stupid things....transmissions voided for tint and LED's come to mind.

MOST enthusiasts don't milk the system, no matter what subaru likes to accuse us of.

You never know, sometimes a tactful, humble request to have it replaced under warranty while admitting your mistake can actually work.
I know it has for me.

And if that doesn't work, support the local economy by buying a local's used airbox.

If it's really cracked, just put the original filter back in and mention the crack when you take it in for service. Just act innocent. "Is the air box SUPPOSED to be like that? I don't know what could have happened. I've never even touched it."

I'm not saying you should lie, but that's really the only way to get "covered under warranty" like you want to.
