Very intriguing news. Already thinking ahead about a refresh and tackling the issues w/ power. Larger displacement engine is probably the way to go. Keep it N/A. However, this is just opening our eyes to the next step and not to jump ahead just yet.

Can the 86mmx86mm (bore and stroke) numbers still hold going from 2.0L to 2.5L?

definitely not, depending on what is being increased. If it was similar to a stroker kit, I would definitely save up and do my poor man's stroker build on my engine If the bore and stroke were increased to 2.5L, then that would make things a little more expensive.

It's not an announcement, it's a rumor with quotes about a guy doing some research projects. I think the safer bet would be that the 86 remains relatively unchanged (mechanically) throughout the production run with minor updates and tweaks until it dies around 2017 or so, or they create a next gen.

I hope they keep the 2.0. Cars like this needs lower trim levels, as adding a turbo/power will make price sky rockets. Alot of people buy these because they are cheap, alot of fun per dollar.

Let's not forget that the whole point of this car was to make a cheap sports car, and they nailed it. I kinda like the hybrid/KERS idea though, it's the next big thing in automotive performance and we can't go around it.

2.0L is an important displacement figure in Japan and many countries as it keeps the tax man away. Larger displacement could hurt sales in other markets unless they offer two options. Thats why there are so many 2.0L turbo engines.

Exactly. In Europe, once you go over 2.0 you have to pay a "luxury" tax and renewing your plates is way more expensive every year.

Exactly. There is no announcement. 90% of the article is speculation.

I can see the base model offering the current 2.0 engine and a performance option with a 2.0 Turbo or maybe the 2.5L. But most people would opt for the 2.0 option as you are most likely looking at $30K+ for a performance version of the car.

You can get a lot more of a performance tuned 2.5 boxer engine, and most importantly you also exponentially increase the power benefit of aftermarket mods.

I like Subaru, but if future generations of this car are going to be pigeon holed to a specific type of engine (boxer) and make due with the ones they have at that moment due to the lack of resources of the company to develop another platforms, then I'm all for Toyota taking the project on their own hands and leave Subaru out of this.
look up a 2.5rs and see how inferior it is to the 2.0 liters. also this engine is lightweight not heavy. And you want subaru to get AWAY from a boxer engine???? P.S. I hope you realize the fa was developed for this car and is a brand new engine. wow. just wow.
